Another newbie question..
The top I wish to use is not a snug fit on the rod tip, what is best to fill this? dry wall tape? thread? The rod is a 12'6" coventional, and hopefully will see a lot of strain.. Thanks.. Re: Top is larger than rod tip..

Greg,
I think thread is where I'd start. Spencer Re: Top is larger than rod tip..

a single layer wrap of size "A" thread under the tip might work. if it is still loose try -C-D or E thread Re: Top is larger than rod tip..

Greg- I first measure the tip of the blank with a tip sizer, then order a tip-top with that size tube, one just above that size and one just below. Example: the tip measures 5.0, then I order a 5.0, a 4.5, and a 5.5. With all three in hand, you can then select the best fit.
Yep- you'll end up with 2 tip-tops you don't need at the moment but more than likely, you'll need them eventually. PK Re: Top is larger than rod tip..

The right sized tip will be the best thing for you .Go to the local hardware store , or home store and buy a plastic drill gauge . they have holes in them graduated in 64ths of an inch . slip it over the tip of the rod to see what size the top is in 64ths , then order the top to the # of 64ths of an inch . A 1/8 in. tip is a # 8 tube , a 5/32 tip is a #10 , a 11/64 tip is a # 11 tip . To measure the barrel of the tip you have now you can use the shank of a steel drill bit , slip bit shanks int the tip top 'till you have one that is snug , then measure it (the drill)with your gauge , this will tell you what you have now . If the top you have is not that loose , use the method the others have mentioned , it works , but a properly fit tip is your best bet . Good luck , John Got Fish ? Re: Top is larger than rod tip..

For a slightly oversized TUBE ID, we have a facil remedy. Use a small diameter guide thread to build up the tip diameter under the tube. Just wrap it uniformly along the length of the blank under the tube, and then ~ 2.0MM extra to make a miniature tapered hosel (a ramp, flush up to, or even onto the the top of, the tube) on the final product.
You do NOT need to use color preserver or thread finish under there. Your GLUE will seal those threads just fine. Just be careful not to set the threads on fire if you use a cigarette lighter to melt your glue. In fact, the more I think about it, don't put a flame anywhere near the rod tip. Melt the glue on the stick, and rub it onto the rod tip. Or use a low-temp glue gun. Make sure to get some melted glue INSIDE the tube before you slide the tip in. And above all, make sure the tip-top is in a straight line with your reel seat and the rest of your guides as the glue cures. -Cliff Hall- Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
