I have some of he old burnt cork and it is light in weight, but it is also soft. It is a trade off I guess. I would think that if you wanted to use Andy's new stuff for it's appearance but didn't want the weight, you could bore it out and use some form of arbor. Just a thought.

Ray,
Whats your old burnt cork made from? Is it say a AAA ring thats been burnt? Putter...Yes burl is a great way to add weight if needed. I plan on useing the exotic burl on split handles. Weights

To obtain more accurate weights, I weighed 25 rings (together, not individually) of each of three kinds, and took the average to get the weight per ring. (These rings were all 1 1/4" diameter, 1/2" wide, with a 1/4" diameter center hole, and were of course before turning.) Results:
High Grade Cork (Custom Tackle) 1.6 g. --- Regular Burl (Custom Tackle) 4.4 g. 2.8 X Exotic Burl - Light (Lamar Tackle) 6.0 g. 3.8 X When I consider that some of my 6'6" freshwater spinning blanks weigh as little as 32 oz. before building, these weight differences are important. Yes, the weight is in the butt area, but that affects rod balance also. I plan to use both burl and exotic burl, especially with my saltwater rods, but if I can find good cork, I will save it for my lighter rods, except maybe for accent bands. Ooops...

I said some of my lightest blanks weigh 32 oz. Sure hope not. I meant 32 grams. Re: cork vs burnt cork vs burl vs dyed cork

Putter,
Try inserting different size screws oe small pieces of lead into the butt until you get the balance you want, then Rod Bond them in. The extra weight should be about the same as if you added more cork (I think). I have done this to balance a few split grip rods to suit the user's balance prefernces Mike Re: cork vs burnt cork vs burl vs dyed cork

Putter,
Try addinf a screw/bolt or small piece of lead into the blank butt until you get the balance you want then Rod Bond it in. I've done this on a few split grip rods to get the balance the user wanted! The weight just replaces the weight of the cork you leave off. Mike Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
