i guess the large number of old bamboo rods that have a short tip might be the "tipoff". some makers also provided two tips with slightly different tapers. one for dry flies and one for nymphing.

Couple of reasons for 2 tips, I think. One reason is to be able to rotated the tips and let them dry out and relax or straighten out if you fish a lot. Another reason is that it is probably easier for a builder to build matched tips when he builds the rod rather than trying to match one years later, and they do break. Look at it as a version of the makers "warranty". He just gives (okay, sells) you 2 to start with and you are on your own. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
