I am planning a steelhead casting rod. I am considering using an exposed blank reel seat. Do you find them useful in feeling the bite? Worth the extra work to fit them? Thanks for your input. Re: exposed blank reel seat - better?

I have been using expoed reel seats for years on all my steelhead drift rods. When free drifting you can feel the sligestest bump.

I agree, they are great for soft biting steelhead. I also just think they are a more comfortable seat to hold onto all day. Re: exposed blank reel seat - better?

Actually less work. If you do not have the blank and plan to order it from one of the sponsors of this board tell them the cork length you plan on using and they will fit it up for you. Decide on the size of the seat and order a Flex Coat Arbor to fit the seat and you will have a fine set up. If you build a lot of rods get the Flex Coat arbor tool with the piloted bit set. If you do just a few the arbors are easily worked with a hand reamer. I build primarily for salt water and prefer the Fujis with a TiCh hood.
