Hi Everyone,

I've recently purchased two blanks...Orvis Glx series if I recall correctly...and this being one of my first forays into the world of rod building I'm a bit perplexed.

I am currently waiting for my books to arrive to help in the process but I'm a bit stymied with an initial problem. Both are multi-piece blanks and both have a plug type ferrule (I think that's correct). There is a plug inserted into the butt section of the blank to make it male and the tip section slides over this plug. Howver, there's currently a significant gap between the two sections of the blank.- 1/4" to 1/2" approximate.

I went looking through the board archives and wasn't able to locate any information on this subject. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With use the ferrule will wear some and that gap will close up alittle. You need that gap. If it was not there, after alittle wear, the male and female ends would touch and the ferrule would no longer be tight. You could not push them any closer together.

Really? It'll wear that much to close up half an inch? I'll believe you (you've definitely made more rods than I have!!) but it does seem like a lot of space to be closed up through a little wear.

Who's to figure how much it will or won't wear? Orvis left enough space with a safe margin of wear, so to speak. Some people gently snug the ferrules together and keep them well waxed. Orvis doesn't want to replace a rod if some careless owner lets the ferrules get dirty and then jams them together and twists them about. I don't work for Orvis but I guess that's what they deam a safe margin for wear.
