I want to replace the butt section of the EVA grip on a boat rod without takeing the rod apart. Can it be done? If so how?
Thanks Re: Rod repair

Can be done. I've done it with cork butts often. Carefully cut off the old butt and clean up the blank as much as possible without damaging it. Go slow. Prepare the replacement butt as usual. Slide it on from the rear end, with the usual U-40 Rod Bond (or whatever you use) on the blank. The rods I've done had very little taper in the butt section, but you may have to add some masking tape (or other) bushing near the reel, depending on the taper. No clamping needed if you reamed for a tight fit. Cap off as usual. Re: Rod repair

I have used a scrap piece of blank that will be a little bigger than the butt of the original.I then butt the big ends together and use the taper of the scrap to stretch the new one on.This requires the help of an assistant to hold the rod so you can push it on.This has only been necessary with lots of taper which you may have if its a salt water rod. If I have to make a slight arbor with tape, I use 1/4" tape and coat well all around them with the rod bond Re: Rod repair

Ron,
I strongly suggest you follow Rapt Tite's suggestion on the scrap blank method. It will save you a lot of pushing and pulling. Buzz Re: Rod repair

Use hypalon for the replacement grip and it will be much easier. Hypalon has more stretch than EVA.
