Go to lamar reel seats on the left and order Andy Dear's DVD
(The Wood Lathe In Rodbuilding).
It will show you how step by step. Great DVD.
And if you have any problems call Andy he will always help.

You can chuck a raw block or "round" in your lathe chuck. You will not need a tailstock support for this procedure. Keep the stock short, protruding from the chuck only a little more in length than you desire the butt cap to be.

Turn to round, or shape the round to any taper or shape you desire for the cap. Part of the cap off the main stock when finished. Then, centerbore the cap to fit the blank butt end.

Or... centerbore a rough round stock to begin with, stopping shy of coming all the way out the opposite end. Then remove the stock, flip it around, and re-chuck. Now turn to shape and part off. The center bore will already be place.

I have done something similar to what Tam said, but instead of a bore, I turned the wood to have a small post part of the butt cap. This post is sized to fit inside the blank. What I do is rough turn the part to shape and then turn down the post section and then cut it off. Place the post end into the chuck and finish off the butt cap.

Why not just make your handle out of wood and you'll have your
butt cap all in one. You can also turn your wood down and add
a foam or cork preformed butt cap. I pre-drill my wood handle
with a half inch bit and put a steel madrel in it. Put it in
the lathe and turn it down to what ever shape you want. Much
better than cork in my opinion and I would think more durable.
Good luck

Turn your grip, ream it so it sits with a little extending past the end of the blank. Turn a little plug to fit in snugly. Glue it in, chop off the excess, then sand/turn to shape.

Greg, how are those beautiful blanks going. Any chance we lesser mortals can fish with the Excaliburs. Mine'll be a 3 pce, 6'6", 4-8 lb, mod fast. Cheers.
