16mm or 20mm stripper combination?

I'm rewrapping my GLX 11'6" with ceramics this time and will most likely use a 7mm tip with mostly 7s on the upper section. I had 12 and 16 concentional fly strippers before with an extra 16 as a tamer and didn't recall any advantage. I am going to follow Tom's advice and use high frame double foot strippers.

Where the line comes off the spool of my Ross Canyon 6, there is about 4 1/4" to the center of the blank. Any suggestions as to what combo of high frame strippers tp use? Thanks.

I have never seen any advantage in using a size 20. 16 seems to be the largest that realizes you any real advantage.

If you're going to use a tamer set up, I'd use 16 and then a 12 tamer, followed then by another 12. Not two 16's.

I find a high frame 12 stripper to work well enough that I no longer use a 16 on any rods I build for personal use.

I've built several rods for competitive events, and I will tell you there is a definite advantage with 20mm strippers provided they are properly located. Tamers decrease casting distance. High frame guides are not necessary.

Ed,

Don't take this the wrong way, but line tamers can indeed increase casting distance depending upon the stiffness of the line being used. Stripping guides larger than 16mm will not increase distance and high frame guides reduce line slap on the blank. I'm not sure where you got your information or how you've tested the others, but on a casting machine that does not require human input, I've never been able to gain any more distance with larger than a #16 ring and with very supple lines, a line tamer guide definitely does increase distance.

Another thought if you want to go to a #20 ring but don't want to sacrifice weight is to go with a high-frame single foot spinning guide. I don't remember the model off hand but the Fuji SIC with black frames makes a sharp looking stripping guide and can also generate some interesting stream-side conversations.
