Hate to bother folks with this simple question. Thought I remembered seeing something on the board some time ago re: thinning guide-wrap epoxy -- did a search, but couldn't seem to find it.
So, can someone give me some quick advice along these lines? Is alcohol acceptable as a thinner for two-part epoxies? Yes? No? How much? Benefits and/or drawbacks? Thanks. Maybe I'll be able to get the rod done in time for Christmas! Bilgee Re: thinning epoxy

The people who actually formulate and manufacture the epoxies strongly recommend against thinning of any epoxy. However, many builders do it anyway. You can get a bit more info on how by checking the Flex Coat site and looking over their tips for use page. Use the link to the left.

Before there were "lite" mixtures I used to thin epoxy with a couple/three drops of either acetone or denatured alcohol. Now with the number of manufacturers who are making/marketing the "low build" // "Lite build" there's really no reason to thin epoxy. The thin or light build plus application with a spatula should be the first choice. The spatula even works very well with high build finishes. Re: thinning epoxy

Bilge... As Tom notes, the Flex Coat folks recommend thinning the first coat with acetone and they now sell plastic pipets to assist with measuring the acetone. Have not tried it because I use a very thin coat of the "lite" version as a base for a subsequent two or three coats as required. Best, Vance Re: thinning epoxy

I must once again mention my sealer coat of 50/50 flex coat and MEK. Most are against it but it works for me. John Butterfield Re: thinning epoxy

John, I only thin out my Glass Coat. Gives me good controll over how thick I want to use say thicker for but wraps or thinner for guides.
I like the controll??!! No fuss with foil or bubbles Heck I can put it on with my finger if I want and it still flows nice Works for me Re: thinning epoxy
