I just visited several sponsor sites and could not seem to locate burl cork in 1/8" and 1/4" thickness rings.
While on the subject of burl cork, are there differences in the burl cork offered by our sponsors, and is there a specific type recommended for 1) complete burl grip, and/or 2) burl rings as accents within a regular cork grip? Thanks in advance. Jeff Shafer Re: 1/8", 1/4" Thickness Burl Cork Rings

As far as I know cork only comes in 1/2" rings. I know that's all that Burl comes in. You have to slice it to get thin rings. Custom Tackle Supply sells cork jigs
Here are some pix [www.fishingphotos.net] [www.fishingphotos.net] You can get even thinner rings by sticking washers behinf the cork when you slice it. From what I have seen there is little difference in the burl cork. I like Mudholes's. The red is really nice! Mike Re: 1/8", 1/4" Thickness Burl Cork Rings

I purchased 1/4" burl rings from Custom Tackle last year and I use cork/rubber gasket material from the local auto supply for 1/8" trim rings. Ladd Re: 1/8", 1/4" Thickness Burl Cork Rings

You can make your own cok jig by using PVC pip with the inside dia. as the out side dia of the cork. Now yo can cut the desired with you wnt in pip cut about abot 1/2 way threw the pip with a hack saw. the width of the hack saw well allow you to use a utility knife or single blade razorto cut the cork and lightly apply pressur to the blaas you cut also roll the cork as you cut.

Check the pix section; you'll find some rather interesting home-grown cork jigs for cutting cork. Re: 1/8", 1/4" Thickness Burl Cork Rings

Put the rings on a lath, even a drill with a threaded rod and slice them Re: 1/8", 1/4" Thickness Burl Cork Rings

The easiest way to get thin cork it to slice it. As far as burl cork goes, not two rings are the same by nature. Most of the burl you see on the photo page is colored burl (brown, green, red, blue, black). They do sell natural colored burl as well. There is also bamboo burl. All of which are just a bunch of cork chunks glues togeather. If I get a chance I will post a picture of an unfinished natural / brown burl handle I in in the process with. Bill ---
How did you solve the problem of dye not penetrating cork very well? I tried dyeing cork ONE TIME and it was a disaster. I used RIT (analine dye). Obviously couldn't count on the cork rings sinking so had to put them on a steel mandrel ... then had to heat the dye. When I began turning down the cork - away went the dye. Seemed to only penetrate 1/16 of an inch or so... Tips?? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
