cork grip bore to big

Hi,
I have a 7wt. Loop blank to build a fly rod for saltwater seatrout fishing. I've found a good quality full wells cork grip in my box but unfortunately the bore in the grip is a little bit too big. Ready in place the bore fits perfect on the butt side but is around 0,03'' too big on the tip side. My question: Should I buy a new grip with a smaller bore or is it fine to put a layer or two of tape under the grip? The idea is to put (tape) wraps with a little space between where the glue has a connection directly to the blank. My english is far from perfection. I hope you understand what I mean. Maybe some "d" size thread? If it will be thick enough? Re: cork grip bore to big

A spiral of regular wrapping thread will take care of any area that needs to be shimmed. Don't use tape.

since the gap is at the tip i would suggest that tape may be a pain to use. it may want to peel back as you slide the seat down. as bill said, lay in some thread wraps to fill that gap. if you have vernier calipers (and all rod builders should) measure the inside of your handle at the tip and then build up thread on the blank until it is the same diameter. make that thread wrap as long as you need to. if you use "A" thread you could be a little more precise since you can overwrap in finer increments to achieve the proper buildup. the other
advantage of thread is that the epoxy will soak into the thread but won't soak into tape. Re: cork grip bore to big

Thanks for your fast reply.
I'm not sure if I understand right. Do you mean I should wrap the area and then put the glue on the thread wraps and the thread wrap soaks the glue (I use a two component epoxy wrap)? Is it another possibility to wrap the area and than put flex coat on it or just put flex coat on it and mount the grip when it is dry? Stefan Re: cork grip bore to big

Date: December 20, 2004 04:04PM i'm a beginner, but i think it's safe to say do not use epoxy meant for thread wrapping for securing a cork grip to a blank. i read over and over rod bond is very nice and despite my limited experience with other brands, rod bond works great. sounds like people are saying wrap the bank with thread to take up some of the space, then use "glue" (rod bond, as an example) for securing the cork grip to the bank (and threads). eric fresno, ca. did not intend to confuse you. don't use flexcoat or some other epoxy you would use for guide wraps. use your rod bond (i happen to use a slow set epoxy glue) in the standard way for glueing on a cork grip.

The thread will be used as a shim to center the tip section of the handle. But use the rod bond to glue it onto the blank Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
