When you see "mag" involved you're really looking at a blank that supposedly has a faster taper - greater difference between butt and tip power, than the regular versions. I don't think there is any set guidelines for what constitutes "mag" power but generally I'd say the mag version will be a little faster action and more power in the butt.

Bucky,
I agree with Tom, the mags have a stiffer butt section. A few years ago, while wade fishing in South Texas we got into a cove that was teaming with redfish. A friend was using a store bought rod that was rated as a moderate power and moderate action. Yet when he would set the hook on a red, the rod acted more like a slow action rod and he kept losing fish. Shortly after returning from our trip he had me make him a rod. I chose a St. Croix mag bass blank. We went fishing and he had a ball with his rod. He could really stick the fish with his new tool. Reds have hard mouths and you really need a good hook set when fishing for them.
Cheers, Ellis
