insetting a coin in the butt cap

Just wondered how you creative titans tend to excavate the cork butt cap so you can inset a coin more flush or do many just whip up some epoxy and glue it on slighty elevated above the surface? Thanks for your input.

I think it'll get ripped off if you don't recess the cap. Many of the rubber caps are already recessed. You just clean off the surface of both and epoxy the coin in. Put on a coat of color preserver and then pour in some finish until the surface of the recessed coin is level.

On a cork or wood cap without any recess I'd drill one in there.Forstner bits will cut a flat bottom hole but it really doesn't matter since the coin will cover the hole anyway. So you can use about any bit that is the same size diameter as the coin.

On a cork handle, while the handle is still on the mandrel for my lathe, I actually just took one of my lathe tools and carefully made the recess to put a pin into it. Then just used sandpaper to finish it up. Then I used that blue painters tape and wrapped that around the handle leaving it past the end of the handle. When I poured the epoxy in to cover the pin, I also had the epoxy go past the cork with the tape holding the form. Removed the tape and then cleaned up the epoxy edges. The final thing, I had about 1/8" of epoxy beyond the cork and the epoxy was the butt cap. If I can find the picture of it I took, will post it.

After making your hole for the coin, I would suggest rod bond to gule it in. Then clear over it

The handles I have does not have room to recess the coins I have selected which are about the size of a quarter. So I have a wooden buttcap of teak or oak then glue the coin directly to this. I put 4 or 5 coats of epoxy on the coin first then touch up arounf the edges after gluing it on were needed. Hold up great and looks good and is different.

Rod,

I use a dremel tool with a sanding drum. The drum has to have a squared off edge (flat face) as opposed to the rounded ones. I outline the coin on the cork ring with a light pencil line. Then I'll start removing material very slowly with the tool on high speed. Take a little out, try the coil. Repeat.

Thanks,
Rick
