Spiral for long steelhead rods?

Anybody out there done any spiral wrapping on longer steelhead type rods? When I say longer I'm talking 91/2' plus, fast action. My current project is a 12' big river spoon rod. Being a two piecer my concern is of course the tip section twisting under load not to mention casting fatigue that is going to be generated by mostly side arm casting. I have read by some that the spiral wrap lends itself well to the sidearm cast. Any input would be great. Thanks, Joe Hart Re: Spiral for long steelhead rods?

I have an 11 foot rod I keep in Alaska that is spiral wrapped. I use it for salmon and steelhead. The longer a rod and the stronger and heavier the fish - the better a spiral wrap will perform over conventional. Re: Spiral for long steelhead rods?

Joe, Rich F. is right on with this. Whether one piece, two piece, long or short. The spiral wrap will handle better for fish fighting and stability. Side arm casting should be no different is seeing the performance, as bringing in the fish the rod will conform to the stable position with the reel side up and less torque at the tip, thus reducing fatigue and increasing stability. I would think that a spiral wrap for the rings would eliminate any tendency for the tip section to twist off line during fishing. I know this can be a problem on conventional type rods. Re: Spiral for long steelhead rods?

Joe, I currently use a spiral wrapped rod for steelhead (13' SCIII) and haven't had any problems of that sort. One suggestion I can add is use a higher frame guide (I fish floats). I'm having problems with the line hitting the blank as it's comming off the reel. According to other rod builders the distance of my first guide (26" from center of reel) is fine. I feel the line hitting and sticking (when wet) is because of the guides. Oh well... live and learn. Randy Re: Spiral for long steelhead rods?
