How many of you coat the entire rod. ( heavy usage saltwater boat or trolling rods ) Do you have any secrets or tips. I finished my first rod last night and it looks good but I just want to see if any one has any tips. This is my process 1. Butt wrap and under wraps 2. Coat those wraps 20 rpm let run for 45 minutes are finished 3. Let dry 6 rpm let run for 24 hours 4. Put the guides on 5. Coat them 20 rpm let run for 45 minutes are finished 6. Let dry 6 rpm let run for 24 hours 7. Coat the entire rod 12 rpm let run for 45 minutes are finished 8. let dry 6 rpm let run for 24 hours I am new at this and am following an example from a local rod builder. I just want some extra tips that he may not being doing. I would really like to see some more info on coating the entire rod. In all the books and videos I have seen and even on these post no one talks about doing that. Different question: If I put cp on my wraps do I still need to coat it with normal coating? You would not want to coat the actual blank with epoxy rod type finish, if anything at all. Color preserver is to seal the wraps and preserve the on the spool coloration. It will not hold up for long in the environment you face, so some type of wrap finish should be applied over it. ...................... Re: Tips of the trade

I am now really confused! Coating the entire blank is a common practice down here. Most all of the large rod shops do it. All of the charter boat captains use these rod and use them for years. These shops coat them with Flex Coat high build. Have you ever used a Ugly Stick GBU-845 blank? How do you get this blank to look good with out coating it? Re: Tips of the trade

This is off the subject Wesley, I recognize those names as being in Orange Beach , I usually fish 3 weeks a year down there. If you live in that area your a lucky guy, I think it's the best fishin on the panhandle. If you are familiar with the trysler grounds I'd like to talk to you. I just have a few questions any info would be appreciated. Thanks Blusk10989@aol.com Re: Tips of the trade

Using epoxy finish to coat blanks with is sort of something we don't do here. It doesn't protect the blank and only adds weight. It also doesn't adhere well enough to stand up for years of use without cracking and peeling. The last blanks I coated I used the U-40 Permagloss on. I had heard so much about how much tougher, clearer and lighter it was than an epoxy finish. It also is said to adhere better to the blank and will last longer and is harder against abrasion. Thus far I like it. I had a hard time figuring out the best way to apply it but I made a tube and have been dipping my blanks. They're pretty slick and within a week or so rock hard. Time will tell how well they hold up. I have only a few that have been in use for more than a year. Re: Tips of the trade

Wesley a good portion of repairs come from the Fla. based mass producers, mostly its people looking to get their rods refinished because they are now chipping and peeling, they look good at first but given a little time most will show signs of severe detoriation John Re: Tips of the trade

I called U-40 and asked them what they thought. They said there product Perma Gloss would not provide the high build look I was after. What they did tell me was the Perma Gloss made a harder finish than normal Flex Coat and to try using the Perma Gloss after the Flex Coat for a final coat. The weight of the rod is normally not a factor for me. I usally fish international 30's or 50's Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
