I have quite a few rods with them. They are remarkably sturdy, and quick to put the reel into. The other cool thing about them is when I was in Japan I would find junk rods that were broken, and could just cut the threads off holding the seat in place and have a spare seat for another rod. I don't know how heavy I would go personally, but they have caught some pretty darned big fish on them.

I use them all the time on my surf rods. I use either cork tape or lately shrink tube for the handle. Then I put a layer of friction tape down and put the plate seat on top of than and tape the seat to that with friction tape.
This is a very easy system for getting the reel in exactly the right spot.
I only use spinning reels and I have found that the perfect spot for the reel is in a different spot on every rod that I have.
I fish the northeast surfand I have been using rods this way for over 12 years and have never has a problem.

Outstanding seats. Very easy to operate and quite sturdy even on heavier rods.
