While looking at the latest Outdoor Life mag last night, I got an idea for a checkered wood reel seat. Has anyone done it, what did it look like? i was thinking a nice checkering with a diamond in th middle, or an oval to inlay something would look nice. I've tried checkering a gunstock once, and I don't think I'll try this myself, any ideas? Thanks Re: wood reel seat decoration

I've done it and know others that have. It's nice and it's something different. No reason not to give it a try. ............ Re: wood reel seat decoration

Steve, I have been toying with the idea of checkereing for several years, but have never had the time to get into it and do it right. There is a girl up in the Pacific NW, that does contract checkering, and she is amazing. She used to checker a lot of the Kimber pistols and rifles. She has a website, but at the moment the address escapes me. Andy Dear Lamar Reel Seats Re: wood reel seat decoration

Brownell's sells checkering tools to gunsmiths all over the place; if you want to get the tools. Re: wood reel seat decoration

andy, I found her website, I'll keep it in for future reference. It looks to be a bit pricy, but good craftsmanship always is. Putter, I have a set of the tools, just not the skill. I've tried a couple of pieces of scrap wood, and old gunstocks but I can't seem to do very good, but then I can't draw astraight line with a straightedge. Re: wood reel seat decoration

I have checkered quite a few custom gun stocks in years back and got pretty good at it. It is something that you can't just do on a I want to basis. You have to practice, practice, practice, and I mean a lot of practice before you will ever do something passable. If your hands are not rock steady, don't even attempt it.
