I am building a flyrod for my 9yr old nephew for Chistmas and just about have it wrapped. After I put my first coat of finish on I want to write down a nice inscription for him in the butt area but I can't for the life of me think of what to write for a child. I want him to know it was built by me,specifically for him,but can't quite figure out the best words to use or just how to say it.I know that probably sounds silly but I'm just not use to writing in a way that would appeal to a young child. Does anyone have any advice on what I could write in a case like this? What kind of inscriptions have others done on rods for family and children? Any and all advice appreciated! Thanks. Tony, Nothing sounds as sweet to anyone as their own name. Put his name on it in larger letters and yours in smaller ones. JOHNNY JONES by uncle Tony One of the first things people do when I give them a rod is to look at their own name and grin. Ron Re: Help with inscription on rod for nephew

I'm doing this for my grandsons. On the top of the rod, large font, their name. On the underside, much smaller font, "Built by Grampa". And I'm using decals for Decal Connection. Re: Help with inscription on rod for nephew

Great topic Tony, I would venture that the creativity in the inscription won't impress Johnny very much at this age. But later in life when he has entrenched himself in flyfishing, he'll realize how special this rod was to him in during his developmental years. Something as simple as "Made for Johnny, by Uncle Tony" would be great. He'll remember it forever. Those of who have been flyfishing for many years still can't bring ourselves to part with the inexpensive rods we started out with, they're just special to us. They hang on our shop walls. This rod will be extra special to Johnny. Good Luck, Jeff Re: Help with inscription on rod for nephew

I'm new here and this is my first post so here it goes. How about something slightly sentimental like, "Johnny, its just the beginning. Uncle Tony." He may be a bit confused at first but it'll make sense later. Or something cool like "Johnny's Excaliber, wrapped for battle by Uncle Tony." Re: Help with inscription on rod for nephew

Many thanks for all the great suggestions! He's use to having to struggle with "Dad's rod",a 9ft 5wt,so I think this 3pc 8ft 4wt Forecast should be just right for him. Blue happens to be his favorite color so wrapped the blue blank with a contrasting navy blue thread and metallic copper trim(one of my favorites combos for this blank).I think he'll be pretty happy with it(especially since it's his very own rod and not Dad's).I also turned the grip down so it should fit his smaller hands much easier.
