I put a few coats of PlastiCoat mettalic spray on a blank last night. The can suggests that a full cure will be achieved in 30 minutes. After 45 minutes I started to apply my first coat of Permagloss and immediately the paint wiped right off the blank in the area I was working on. I fully suspect that I should have waited a while longer for the paint to cure (24hrs?) before applying the Permagloss. Is this a correct assumption?

Before I became frustrated I just stopped what I was doing, put the rod down, and went upstairs for the night. I only have a short 6-8" section of urethane to sand off and re-paint so it's no big deal. I've used spar urethane before and didn't have any problem with it taking the paint off the blank, but I believe the paint cured much longer than the can's suggestion of 30 minutes. If I wait for a good cure, should I have any problems with the application of Permagloss? This is my first experience with this product and just want to find it quirks so we get along in the future.

This is probably a simple incompatibility between the plasticote and the solvent in Permagloss (Xylene). Xylene is a much more aggressive solvent than what is found in most spar urethanes.

I've made similar mistakes and now I always test my paint and clearcoat before I actually use it on a rod. It's sometimes very difficult to tell if the two will be compatible or not unless you actually test them.

I'm so sorry I said something wrong. I was using Rust-Oleum Mettlic not PlastiCoat. Jay

I think that stuff is thick enamel. I would not use it myself. The plasti-kote is a lot thinner less weight and lacquer based.

I have found Permagloss to desolve most anything but the auto finishes.

That is why I will be coating my blanks and threads with a auto polyurethane clear.
