i have just finshed i first beach rod 12`6 and built withe fuji BNHGs The rod thas cured for a few days and i start to flex it only to find a cracking sound from one of the rings is this common and will i go away??

It's not coming from the guide ring, but more likely from the area under the leg/blank junction where the finish has entered and is "squeaking" against the blank. It's very common, sometimes a little disconcerting, but hardly ever results in any problems. Often once things settle or work in, the noise disappears.

Don't panic. It is not that uncommon. It probably will not become a problem. It is likely to become unnoticeable after the rod has been used a bit in different temperatures.

It's like breaking in a new pair of fancy all-leather shoes; the uppers creak until they have been flexed a bit and the soles slide until they have been scuffed enough to catch the ground. The thread tension in the uppers has to go thru some cycles of relaxation and stretching, and the flexing of the casting resin that is soaked into the thread itself. And the sole of the guide foot has to settle into a spot on the rod blank or underwrap onto which it will hold and no longer slide or list.

I mean, think about it: Where could the sound be coming from?
Is the ceramic ring loose inside the frame?
Is the ceramic ring cracked somewhere?
Are the guide feet sliding over the rod blank or underwrap thread?
Is the thread finish so high up the frame that it is flexing off?
Are the tunnels filled with thread finish, or is it an echo chamber?
Is the thread tension re-adjusting after the rod and guide flex?
Did you pack the thread really tight at the tip of the guide's toe?
Did you let the thread ride up the heel of the guide, onto the leg? (Don't!)
Is the overwrap thread tension changing or are the threads moving at the tip of the guide's toe or the back of the guide's heel?

Think about these questions. Exam the ceramic ring and eliminate that source of the problem. A cracked ring will only get worse, and ultimately rub thru if not slice off your line like a razor.

At the tip of the toe or at the back of the heel is where the greatest change in thread tension occurs as the rod is flexed. Either the thread is stretched or relaxed, or the guide slides over the thread, or the thread moves over the metal guide feet. The distance here is tiny, but the energy is enough to hear it.

I think that flexing the rod a bit after the wraps are done and before the thread is coated may help the threads settle into place. But that still leaves the flexing of the casting resin after it has cured. Like I said, not to worry. Watch the way the finish wears with use and time. See if visible cracking or separation occurs somewhere over time, or if water gets in during rain or washing. In the light of those observations, you'll come to make your own assesments and your own adjustments. LOL, -Cliff Hall-.

Did you make sure the bottom of the guide feet were uniform to the blank and did you taper the top of the guide feet also to much finish well cause that sound, did you get enought finish in the tunnel under the wrap?
