Pilot Drill Bits

I was looking through a catalog and saw pilot drill bits. I was wondering if anyone has tried them. If you have are they worth the money and are they easier than reaming the cork?

The Flex Coat models are made for boring the foam arbors they sell. I would guess they'd work in cork too?

I have 3 sizes and anybody who thinks that wrapping masking tape around a blank for arbors isn't obsolete needs to try these. We're talking like less than a minute to completely size and mount a reel seat with these babies.

I see no reason why they wouldn't bore a cork grip just as easily, but you still might have to do just a touch of hand reaming to exactly match the blank's taper. No problem though.

John,

Seems to me that the bits chewed the cork too much.

Makeing a reamer is much better. FlexCoat sells the sandpaper tape and the instructions.

In cork you have to spin them really fast to keep from tearing rather than cutting it. Go undersize a little and then do the final fit by hand reaming. Cork cuts easy.

Thanks Kevin.

I didnt know that about the paddle bits cutting cork..

BUT...I swear..I can reamout a cork ring with the reamer just as fast...actually faster.

I use the Flex Coat drill bits with a small drill press and can ream out 50 rings in a few minutes (as fast as I can grab them) Then I glue them up and final size them with a reamer.

Quick and Easy!!!!

I'm not into building my own grips yet, would they work for reaming a pre-formed grip?
