any of you actually make a burl grip?

i was planning to rebuild a little micro spinning rod which has now turned into a ice rod because of a stupid mistake

i am thinking of grinding up a grip from a broken spinning rod and glueing it together in some sort of mold to make a short little grip for the ice rod only about 4 inches in lenght

enough to give the little reel and my hand a place to hold onto


i have seen repair things using standard white clued and ground up cork to repai patches of a grip

do you think this glue would be strong enough to make a decent grip

For the price of the rings , I think you would be better off just buying 8 or 10 rings and glueing them together to make the grip . Mixing up a batch of Rod Bong and trying to make a grip by mixing in chunks of cork sounds like it would be more of a hassel than it's worth .
Someone may have a different experience doing that , just my oppinion . John

i have most of it ground up already

put the broken blank in a dril and used a scaler to get to cork off and that tore it up pretty good

i know it probably isn't worth the hasle but i am beeing lazer sort of and don't feel like ordering the rings

Sean , I wasn't trying to discourage you , sorry if it sounded that way . If you do go that route , I would use rod bond , not the elemers glue . Mix the glue then add in the cork , pour it into somthing round and smooth , maybe a couple of old pill containers . when it dries crack off the plastic bottle and drill them out. Should work . JD

Check the photo page under the name willierods I have taken epoxy clear, thined it, tinted it, added cork dust and made colored rings for handles. There you can find the molds I have made to do this. Hope this helps

I've built several rod gri from burl cork. I liked the outcome and they seem to hold up well. It sounds like you have lot of work ahead of you. I guess you could mix the shredded burl up and glue iall into a cylinder. My only concern would be getting it compact enough to be firm all across the grip.
