Thread wrapped ferule

You will have to excuse me here because I am green at this. Hope this question doesnt sound too dumb.

Since I am reguiding my rod, I would like to go to a different color thread. My question is: the female part of the ferule is thread wrapped so I would have to remove it and rewrap. Is this adviseable to do or would I do more harm than good to the ferule?

Thanks

You won't harm it a bit. Removed the old wrap and replace it with one of the color of your choice.

If I understand your question correctly, you are removing the old guides and plan to rewrap new guides or relocate the original guides. If you are changing thread color, you would certainly want to remove the older wrap at the ferrule. Removing the old wrap does not harm the blank. The key to a successful rebuild is to be patient and to carefully remove the older finish and wraps. If you use a razor blade or exacto knife to cut the old wraps, cut only on top of the guide foot and only cut enough to seize the old thread with a fingernail or an object softer than the blank you are working on. Please do not use a razor to clean the old finish off of the blank. You run the risk of hacking the rod and damaging the grahpite fibers. Good luck, and let us know how you did.

While the thread is off the female ferrule, don't seriously bend the rod.
Take a look at the LIBRARY Tab at the top of the WebPage. Several of the articles there should be of interest to you. May I recommend these:
Surface Preparation By Ralph O'Quinn
Refinishing Rod Blanks By Ralph O'Quinn
They are a little long, but discuss some very critical issues. One being that epoxy thread finish itself is a casting resin and has very poor adhesion to the blank surface. Another is how it prepare a surface for the application of an adhesive or new finish. If the placement of your new guides is different than the old spacing scheme, these two points in the re-building process become more of an issue. Avoiding damage to the blank itself is a priority, so do read these first, and come back with your additional questions. Best Wishes, Cliff Hall.

You do not need to prepare the blank for application of thread wrap epoxy. The article mentioned is really just for refinishing the blank itself, if you even need to do that.
