When removing guides off a rod, I get everything off except this kind of "film" that remains.

I use a plastic "scraper" (the kind you get with stone baking stuff) and it works great on everything except this film.

I don't want to use the scotch pad because I am converting the rod to a spiral wrap, so the guides will not match up on the same spots, so I can't have the scuff marks.

The blank is glossy, so if I use a restorer, can I use it only on the scuffed parts, or should I do the entire blank?

Or, has anyone used a mild abrasive like Soft Scrub cleanser to try and remove this?

I'd like to help you on this but honestly do not know what sort of "film" you are dealing with. I have seen removed wraps leave impressions or scars, but not a film.

Household cleaners that scour the surface are really doing very much the same thing as Scotchbrite will. Pick a cleaner that is too harsh and you could scar the blank much more than the fine grey Scotchbrite will.

I think I would put a hair dryer to it and attempt to scrape off whatever film you are dealing with by using your thumbnail or a plastic butter knife.

Again, I wish I could see the rod as I am not used to having any such film remain after removing a guide.

Dave I have on occasion seen what I think you are referring to,some mass produced rods seem to use two different types of finish the bottom one of which could appear as a film extremely thin almost acts like tissue paper, i think you will find using a mild heat source as Tom suggested should aid in removing it. If I am not mistaken ugly stick uses it on some of their factory rods.

film was a bit misleading. It is the impressions left from the CP or epoxy, but just don't seem to be coming off at all. It is an old Bass Pro Shops rod that I am trying the spiral wrap on.

It just seams that it is particularly difficult to clean this one. I have done others with no problem, just can't seem to get this one done.

Sometimes, tightly wound guides actually leave an impression in the blank's original finish. The thread pattern can be seen as this impression in the blank's surface. Not much you can do about this unless you wish to refinish the area. Not worth it in my opinion, however.

I think I know what you are talking about. I had it on my eight weight. I refinished the rod and just put some rod finish on i...I use LS 2000. That covered up the e spot.

I've seen what you're talking about. I was able to remove it by taking a double edge razor & very lightly scraping it off the blank. You need to hold the blade parallel to the blank emphasize LIGHT scraping while rotating the blank in your hand. After most of the film is removed, you can remove the rest with your fingernail & not harm the original finish.

The first few guide placements I cleaned using this method I scratched some of the finish off. You might want to practice on an old blank by removing some dried CP
