Underwrap Question

After looking at the beautiful workmanship on the guide wrap photo pages, I am perplexed. A lot of these photos are prior to finishing and, a lot of them appear to only be using size A thread. How do you proffessionals under and over wrap so cleanly? My attempts without first finishing the underwrap always result in line dig! Thank you!

You need to pack your underwraps very well. If you're not going to CP or finish your underwrap first, you may wish to use smaller thread on the underwrap and larger thread on the overwrap.

It is much easier and saves loads of time to apply finish after all the thread is on vs. applying finish to underwraps first, then over wrap, etc.

Use a rod lathe I pack the thread with a finger nail as it goes on - I keep a finger nail on the building edge of the wrap as the rod turns on the lathe. Burnish the thread to fill any gaps . Don't use too much tension on the overwrap. Ensure the guide feet are tapered to a fine taper so the overwrapping thread climbs up the guide foot easily.

Someone, not long ago posted about reversing your wrapping direction between under and overwraps.

Not hard at all to do. You go out one way and then just bring the last thread back up on top of the first and reverse direction. But this would only cover one of the overwraps on one leg of the guide. I don't really see the point in doing it.
