I'm building 2 fly rods. One on a Tradition blank and the other on a Rainforest Blank. I am thinking of using an Amboyna Burl insert on the Tradition and a Maple Burl insert on the Rainforest. Any opinions? Re: Looking for opinions

There are so many great looking woods available for inserts that it comes down to what turns you on. My number one choice is Striped Ebony with Cocobolo a close second. Things to consider are the color of the blank, finish of the reel seat hardware and guides and the color of your wraps. I try to match the reel seat hardware and guides and then select a thread color that is compatable or that looks good to my eye. Many times I wrap a few guides and then take them off and switch to another color thread. For what it's worth that's my opinion. Bob Re: Looking for opinions

i'm going to build a 2 piece 7'-9" three weight rainforest rod this winter and so far my cedar mangrove wood insert looks great with the titanium finish hardware. i'm wavering between matching the green or offsetting it with lime green wraps... eric fresno, ca. Re: Looking for opinions

Amboyna burl and maple burl are both STUNNING and highly figured woods. They are definitely 2 of my favourites. Either one would look great on either blank GUARANTEED. Re: Looking for opinions

Very, very good choices for those blanks, especially if you really like burled woods. Personally, I like woods with a bit less burl than amboyna and maple burl, so my choices for blanks like that would be a little different. I'm especially fond of Claro Walnut (plenty of swirl and a little burl, maybe some tiger striping), and mesquite (gorgeous golden brown color). But, you'll end up with a phenomenal rod with those wood choices. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
