Rogue SJ702, did I get the right blank?
Posted by: William White (---.columbus.rr.com)

I ordered and just received a Rogue SJ702 blank. I'm a bit confused as the advertised but diameter for this blank is .629 inches but the blank I received has a blank diameter of only .585 inches. It came in a sealed sleeve with what appears to be (first Rogue blank I've ever bought) the correct header card and decal. Anyone know of a way I can confirm this as being the right blank? Thanks.

You would have to call or write to Rogue and ask them. The specs and your blank sound way off to me but sometimes companies make running changes in a blank model. I'd call or e-mail Rogue and ask them.

I have two of these at home, I will check tonight and see what mine are. I've made several of this particular model already, and they are VERY large at the butt.

I HAVE TWO OF THEM IN MY SHOP AND BOTH MEASURE .485 ON THE BUTT. THEY ARE VERY GOOD BLANKS. ROGUES ARE MY FAVORITE FOR BASS RODS. I USE THE MB664 AND 663 AND 702 703 704 .

I LOOKED IN MERRICK'S CATALOG AND IT SAYS BUT DIA. FOR SJ702 IS .477 I THINK IT MAY NOT BE AN EXACT SCIENCE.

.485 and .477 is close enough. These things are made by hand and can vary slightly. You can expect them to be off by a little, but not a quarter inch. If we're talking about a 1/32 to 1/16th you can chalk that up to manufacturing variances.

I think the original SJ 702 from years ago had a butt diameter of around .600. There evidenlty has been an inline change since the last 6 I've built have all been in that .477-.485 range.

William White and Mike Naylor-- where did you get the 702's with the large butt diameter? Just curious since the old blanks had a different action than the new ones.

I actually mistyped on my original post. The butt diameter measures .485, so from what Bryan is saying I probably have the right blank. I was using a Janns catalog to look at specs and they list it as .629. After Keith posted I looked around a little harder and found two other sources listing it at .477 also. Live and learn I guess as I much prefer fast to extra-fast action blanks and while being fast, this blank seems to be more towards the slower end of fast. I suppose I'll put it on @#$%& or on the sell/trade board here. Thanks for the replies everyone.

OK, I measured my two. One is .476," the other is .478."

This is not a super-fast blank. If you want fast, get the SJ704. It's much stiffer than the 702. I prefer the 703 myself.
