The new Rodbuilder magazine is here!!!

Do you remember the scene in the movie "The Jerk" were Steve Martin went running around yelling,"THE NEW PHONEBOOK IS HERE, THE NEW PHONEBOOK IS HERE"? No I didn't do that, but that scene popped into my head. Great magazine guys, already read it front to back.

Now with that said got a question, what do you do to get rid of the fuzzies? Finished wrapping a 5wt flyrod lastnight and had a real hard time not getting any fuzzies on the tip section.

I've lightly burned them off with the alcohol burner, and very gentley brushed the area. You may loose a trim band -It happens. It don't take much heat so be careful

That's excellent advice, although you must make certain that the flame does not touch the thread. Also, turn the rod so that the flame is held next to the "fuzzy" rather than below it. That will prevent you from burning or sooting the wrap.

Would sanding lightly after the first coat of finish take them off?

If you are using two coats of finish then you can slice them off with a razor blade or scapel. Works fine. Sanding is too intrusive and you don't need to do that just to remove a nub or fray.

Fuzzys are commonly the result obtained from poor quality thread, particularly poor quality silk thread. Also, if your trim wraps come untied while you are working on the rod, try leaving the tag ends on the wraps until you are ready to varnish.

I do like Mike. Don't worry about them until you have the first coat of finish fully cured then slice off with a double-edged razor. Apply second coat & all is well with the world. My hand just isn't steady enough with a burner to avoid scorching the thread. Metallic thread seems to be the worst culprit when it is wrapped around the tip sections but the razor makes short work of the protrusions.
