Minwax spar urathane in a spray can.

Just wondered if any one else has tried this product out?

While going through trial and error with different paint methods, I found that the hardest thing for me was to get the polyurathne on the rod over the paint without streaks or brush marks. (I did try foam applicators). I tried thinning the poly enough to spray with my airbrush but I had to thin the poly too much and the coverage was spotty which would require too many coats and two part body shop paint was not to be considered because of $$$.

Well the other day while wandering around a Sears Hardware store in the paint section I stumbled across Minwax Spar urathane in a SPRAY CAN (VERY COOL). Sears had Gloss, semi gloss and satin, I asked the paint guy when they brought this in and he said its pretty new.

Well I bought a can of gloss and tried it out.Well let me say this, for a rookie builder like me it was a life saver.!!! The spray is very fine and was very easy to use! From what ive read on many posts the spar urathane is pretty durable though I know it will yellow a bit. But for my application it worked first time and nicely.

If you gents are looking for a nice easy way to coat a blank the Minwax spar in a spray can is a real nice product and a time saver.

Happy wraps "John"

John,

I have used it and agree that it does a good job. Very easy to apply and gives a nice sheen. For whatever reason however, I have not found any of the spray can urethanes to offer the level of protection that the "can" version offers. But yes, it is much easier to apply. Less mess and fuss.

Another good brand is Deft Defthane gloss urethane for exterior use.

I use a auto paint 2 coat system. I beleve it is a urathane or expoxy base. This system has flexibility and dries hard. It is not soft.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Bob Do you have a brand name for what urathane you use?

I was steering away from auto body type paint and clear coats as the price from NAPA was $40.00+ for a pint of base and another $30.00+ for hardener and $15.00 for reducer.

It was a bit too much volume and $$ for the one or two matte blanks ill paint.

I called several body shops but no takers on pianting my blank. the only shop that would wanted $50.00 to do the blank and I had to catch him when he was shooting a color that I needed.

As handy as I am I could not make a squeegie rig work and using foam applicators left streaks in the butt section of the blank!

I guess its like epoxy finish you have to practice a bunch to get a solid tequnique that works.

Many thanks and Happy wraps "John"
