I am a new to rodbuilding and looking for a cheap lathe to turn handles with, around $200 and under. I don’t have any experience with lathes and don’t know really what to look for. Can anyone relay their experiences with the “drill” lathes, do they really work or would my money be better spent on a “real” lathe. Does the $149 Flexcoat lathe come with a rod chuck or will I have to m

Two things, first I just got my first issue of your magazine and I really like it. Lots of good tips that I had to learn the hard way and a few I hadn't heard yet but will be trying out soon. Great info! Second, in the magazine, Vol 5 Issue 1, there is a picture of a flyrod you built usind Tru-Stone inserts. I have not seen this product and I am interested in learning more. Where do you get

Hey Guys, Being new to flyrod building I've relied on masking tape to shim up the void under the reel seat. So far it has served me very well and none of the rods I've built have failed. However, I've heard quite a few folks mention different materials which do a much better job namely graphite and dense foam. Where would I find such materials? Secondly, what is the best way to ream out

i'm using a drill for my lathe and i was wondering what you use for to attach your blank to the "lathe" so when your turning the grips it doesn't wobble and become out-of-round? i made some thing out of some threaded rod and a wooden dowel but it's not true. does anybody know where i can buy i one that will work. i hope you can understand this post, i'm no machinist so i don't know e

I am going to buy a lathe in order to turn my own grips but have some questions that some one surely has answers to. I understand that when you assemble a cork handle from rings that you wax the mandrel so the rings don't get glued on the mandrel. When you go to turn the handle, can you turn it while its still on the mandrel or will it slip? If not, how do you turn the handle if its not on the

I've always just glued the rings to the blank and turned the blank. When using a mandrel do you just glue the cork to a steel rod,and then turn the cork while on the steel mandrel? How do you get it off ? Tap the mandrel with a hammer while in the cork press? Are there any advantages other than not worrying about damaging the blank? Thanks for your help.....................Kyle Uno mas, what's the be

1360. Wood Lathe
Just bought a wood lathe for 69.99 from Harbor Freight. 14"X40" bed, 1/2 hp with sander attachment and table with mitreslide, tailstock complete.Just thought that this was a ridiculous price, I don't know how long the sale will last. Not sure of the policy's of this sight ,if this gets edited, then I will certainly understand.

Just wondering...I see most manufacturer's saltwater fly rods are equiped we rather uninspiring black reel seats. I realize salt is corrosive, but there have got to be some good looking light saltwater reel seat options for fly rods. Can you get away with Fuji spinning seats using their wood inserts--or impregnated wood inserts in general? Will the salt ruin wood every time? I noticed Abel ro

Do you need to use a stablized wood for your trim rings or reel seat ? If you use apply bees wax on the wood while turning it on the lathe, woludn't that work?

I'm interested in turning my own cork grips; now that I've caught the "bug" Tom Kirkman warns us about in his book. What is the best setup for this process? I'm not too sure of myself with a hand rasp so I've been snooping around looking for a low cost powered device. For instance, the Flex Coat cork lathe setup. My question is; can I turn the cork on a mandrel or is this thing only fo

I am about ready to turn my first grip, do you use a mandrel or glue the rings on the blank and then turn? I am a little scared of turning the grip on the blank cause if I mess up I'm stuck. Can you all give me any advice here? Thanks, John Chaney

I just finished making a vertical spine finder. when I compared the marks to the of a regular spine finder on 3 seperate blanks they were from 30 to 45 degrees off. What would create this? Thank you.

My only experience on a lathe is with metal. My question is about grind angle on the tool for turning reel seat inserts. Would a grind angle of 7 to 10 degrees be good for wood? I have looked at some wood gouges and most look nothing like tools for a metal lathe, roughing gouges are "U" shaped.

I just purchased a Jet Mini lathe so I can turn my own grips (and eventually turn reel seats). However, I'm curious to hear how others have setup the mandrel when turning cork. I've purchased a 3-jaw self-centering chuck and I'll be turning the cork on some type of mandrel rather than on the blank. First of all, what do you recommend to use for the mandrel (a threaded rod or otherwise)? I don't

Did not see anything in search. Setting up area for rod building and need some ideas on bench/table to make or purchase. Kitchen table is now off limits, seems some brush cleaner and wood finish do not mix (next topic will be repair of wood finish)! I think I would prefer to sit and use an office type rolling chair. I have the standard Flex Coat rod wrapper and finishing motor. 2' x 8' -

Need a bit of direction..... I'm restoring an old bamboo fly rod & I've run into something I've never encountered before. The old reel seat, which I'd like to replace with a newer styled one, is a downlocking nickel plated brass seat which slides over a wooden spacer (approx 3/4 inch diameter) which runs not only the entire length of the seat but also under the handle. What I originally tho

I turned my grip and epoxied it to my first cane blank project, w/o making sure that the top (?) end was flat / level. As a result, the winding check (hex) I want to use does not sit flush on the cork, but instead with a noticeable cant to one side. If it were level, it would show a gap between it and the grip. I want it to fit and be level, but am afraid that hand sanding will never come out r

What is the best way to fab a cork ring handle for a saltwater bait rod and where to find the right cork rings for this project. What worries me is the large I.D. required somewhere between .8 and .9 causing a thin wall and how is the I.D. reamed to this size. I would like the O.D. to be around 1.3 to 1.4 inches. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated Thank You

It seems the most common type of tool for wrapping guides is some sort of post with a vee cut out of the top. Sure, Renzetti makes their Rod Lathe but is anything that exotic needed for basic hobby builders? Being the tinkering, do-it-yourself, kinda guy I am, making my own stand only seems natural. Are there any design no-no's to avoid? Most stands I've seen have felt strips in the vee's, is th

I am not an experienced rod builder as I have only built 4 rods so far. Any ideas on parts,(or places to get them), tools or techniques would be appreciated. I have a St. Croix 13' 8wt blank. For the cork I was looking at the preformed grips fom Anglers Workshop. I do not have a lathe, but would get one if that was the "way" to go. I am thinking about a Struble U16B reels seat with t

I went to town (Monterrey, Mexico) today to look for some wood to turn for inserts and was pleasantly suprised. About the third place I came to showed me an extensive variety of bueatiful wood. Aparently some of the natives in the South-east are pulling trees out of the jungle that they can't even identify. I got 14 different woods in 2X4X1.5 (actual size) for about $30 dls. Some are more commo

I have plans on Microsoft Word for all interested. Email me and I will send an attachment. What size square stock wood will turn down to what size insert? I'm begining to look around, and before I order wood I'd like to know what size I should get before I end up with wood for pens or wood to make a baseball bat (which I eventually will). What is the minumun length I should get. 5 inches? 5/8" x 5/8" = ?? what size insert 3/4 x 3/4" = ?? 1 x 1" = ?? OR... What
