Thanks for the tips guys. I used light gray thread no CP with silver trim wraps. All of my silver tag ends show through the main wraps. How do I avoid this? thanks, mark

Hi, when applying my first coat of finish should i apply finish past the threads and create a neat edge or should that be done with the 2nd coat? Also do you have any tips for getting finish in the space under guide feet on double foot guides? found it kind of difficult and i got finish on the blank in front o that area. My dryer doesnt have a slip clutch but i could see that being a big help. I'

I'm interested in making my own grips and was wondering if you think the grizzy hobby lathe tool would fit the bill? Looks like its a new item. Just not sure what features i need in a tool like that to make cork grips. thanks, mark

Thanks alot guys. I'll do some experimenting. Is it a bad idea to do it all in one batch? Glue arbor to blank then install reel seat with same glue batch? I just tried it and it seemed to work pretty good. Was able to twist reel seat on without twisting arbor. Then i installed front grip and clamped....mark

On my last build i glued up the reel seat and 1 pc foam arbor at the same time. The arbor spun a little and moved a little when i installed them. This time i thought id try gluing up the arbor first. Should i glue the arbor to the blank first or should i glue the arbor to reel seat first then install on blank? thanks, mark

Thanks guys. My concern was that these parts might not be compatible. Wish i could go to the store for some testing! Do you think a standard size fly reel seat would work with a 1500 or 2000 size spinning reel? thanks, mark

Do you think i can use a fly grip with recessed pocket and a spinning reel seat together? Or do you think i can use a fly reel seat with a small spinning reel? Im planning an ultra light panfish bobber rod. 9" rear grip and id like to use a 7" full wells front grip. 9' 4wt blank set up for spinning reel. thanks, mark

Thanks guys! So i dont have to worry about denatured alcohol removing any gloss finish or color from a rod blank?

Which is best for rod building tasks, denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol? I've been using rubbing alcohol for glue cleanup and cleaning areas of the blank. thanks, mark

Not sure if im using the right terminology but i saw a video recently that mentioned a highlight wrap and a vine leaf wrap. Seemed pretty simple. Is there any online resources or books for these types of wraps? Most of what i find is the more complicated wraps and weaves. thanks, mark

Hi, I completed gluing up a handle assembly on my 7' downrigger rod last night. One problem I always seem to have is where the threaded part of reel seat meets the grip. In this case a size 18 seat meeting a cork foregrip. I taped the edge of each part but i cant get a clean glue line there. It seems to bulge out there. Any tips for avoiding that? Also should i have some kind of clamp device to h

Hi, im looking for a couple of 10' 2pc 6wt fly blanks or maybe a spinning blank with similar action. 10' or 10'6" moderate action, medium lite power, 6-10lb line. Do you have any suggestions? Rod will be used for flatline trolling tandem streamers for rainbows.

Guys, thanks very much for the advice. Im embarrassed because ive done lots of studying. I have read several books and watched lots of videos. I built 3 rods, 4 or 5 yrs back and im just getting back into it. On those first rods i followed manufacturers recommendations for components, guide spacing etc. This current project is my first truly custom rod i guess. It's a rod that i cant find in a fa

My recent component order was a complete flop. The guides i ordered are too small and the reel seat too large. What is the best way to figure out the proper sizes of these parts? I dont have any parts at home to compare. Are there general guidelines to go by for certain types of rods? thanks, mark

Thanks Guys. I guess i was just thinking about general guidelines. Hope to choose a blank that is not too heavy nor too light for its intended purpose. Its not a situation where i will be fighting large gamefish and using lots of drag. Intend to be fishing for 3-8lb rainbows flatlining streamers with 6-10lb leaders. mark
