I saw a picture somewhere and it showed the height comparison from the different micro guides that each company made. I am interested in building my next rod with micros and was thinking that the guide with the greatest height off the blank would offer the chance to use one less guide for the application. Does anyone know the source of the picture, maybe? Or have the height comparison data?

Joe, that is a more than generous offer. I don't think I need the rod itself, but if you have the Common Cents data on it, that would be awesome.

I'm looking for a "from my experience" piece of information here. Another friend of mine said hs has an old fulcrum that he broke a substantial portion of tip off of a while back and he was asking me if I could put together a similar rod. Seems those fulcrum rods were quite the in-expensive popular rod for some time and I did a search and found that there was a counter weight in the b

Yeah Jeremy, even after the Air Force performed laser eye surgery on me I can see but they sure didn't fix my pan and scan ability.........my mistake for not looking thoroughly enough.

3 piece would be better truthfully, it could double as a pack rod for him when hitting high mountain lakes for lake trout. I could not find information on the website, but sent them an email. Thanks for the info.

The Cabela's blanks look like a good fit, the mudhole series was the first place I looked, but I don't see a 2 piece that fits the build.

367. Blank suggestions
A friend of mine broke a kistler rod this weekend from poor storage techniques and had an anchor cleat take the tip off between the 2nd and 3rd eyes. Being recently laid-off he asked me to see what I could pillage from this rod to build another. So I told him, no prob, I'll see what I can re-use, and I told him it would probably be guides and hook keeper but may be able to salvage the reel seat

Russ, I'm on rod numer 2 and 3 right now, and I don't own a book about it, but I'll tall ya what, I wish I had read more before assembling rod 1, and I wish I had used practice pieces to practice guide finishes before finishing rod number 2. Diamond wraps, I look at them and just stare in amazement, so I will be buying a decorative wrap book and advanced custom rod building here in short order.

So if I understand correctly thread holds the guides on, the finish protects the threads, then one coat of finish should work just as good as 6 coats(hypothetically speaking).

Sorry that I did not elaborate on the results that I got from the TM Lite. I prepped the rod with a 0000 grey pad where the guides were to be set, then went after it with alcohol to clean it up. Wrapped the guides on like normal. I put some 1/4" masking tape ~1/8" from the wrap to act as a block. I mixed the product(even measured with syringes) and applied it with the spatula while

I have been searching through the forum here and I can't seem to find an answer to a guide wrap finish question that I have.
I hear folks like to finish them with high build, or low build, or even permagloss. Some like a single coat all the way up to multiple coats of each type of finish. I recently tried to use some TM Light build and was not happy with the product, entirely my fault too, I

Have you tried some goggles to shield your eyes from any fumes?

I'm interested in hearing the experts chime in on this one, if it were me, I'd clean both ends up with alcohol, then take and rub a candle to the male end.

No kidding, this forum is the most professional, informative one I've found on the internet. The information is plentiful, folks are more than willing to chime in with suggestions or personal experience, and the jokes are abundant and light hearted.

A moderate action 8 wt would work nicely, most guys throw a 9' rod but I've heard a few say they would like to have a touch longer rod. Dad fishes it every year and he is entertaining the idea of having me build him a rainshadow 8wt switch rod for fishing up there.

I'm relatively new too, one thing I've seen folks do is just hit the threads with a flame source to get those tiny frays out that the burnishing tool didn't get. As for hitting those high spots with some light sandpaper, I don't think that will hurt at all as long as you're not digging too deep. In the tiger wrapped witeup, they say you can sand the first finish level and the next coat of finis

So Les, you're running spiral wrapped on all your casting rigs that you mention here? I can see the benefit of it now more than ever.
Forum: rodboard 14 years ago

I was kicking around the idea of spiral wrapping it, and now I can see why. The guides I bought were the fuji new concept set for a 6'-7' rod. So there were nine guides. The ones near the front of the rod are really size 6 fly guides that they put in the guide set. nothing is wrapped in place yet, so I could just flip em, use the 10 as the bumper and then place them statically?

So I just tried this and it looks good when the rod is loaded. It is a kistler 6'6" medium casting rod, with the fuji concept guides on it, so there are 9 guides and the tip, this is the measurements that I came up with the first time working with the stripper at 46".
4 1/4, 8 1/8, 12, 15 1/2, 19 1/4, 23 3/8, 28 3/4, 36 1/4, 46
and I wasn't so sure of those numbers with the dista

Ahh, auto parts stores, I wouldn't have thought it....this place rocks, thanks Chris. I plan on getting into the acrylics as well, so I'll have to scope out woodcraft.

381. Abrasives search
I'm having trouble finding abrasives to work with. I've found 400grit at my local home depot and figure I'd have to order some 600 or higher grit wet dry paper, what brands do you recommend for this? Also the higher stuff, polishing paper and whatnot, kinda the same question, what's the cream of the crop?

Thanks Steve, I am not thinking this morning, or my hands aren't typing what I'm really thinking, in differences, I meant measurment of guide placement. I'm only on rod number 2 and 3 and I'm soo fully enveloped in rod building.

Maximum deadlift, that's what I was looking for, I knew there must have been a reason I just didn't catch that in the article you wrote in the library. I'm one of those folks who aren't happy doing things without knowing why I'm doing it in a particular fashion. Thanks!

Please correct me where I'm wrong on this, this is only second rod build and first casting rod build. From everything I've read about static guide placement, you weight or flex from the tip of the rod and place guides in relation to where the blank wants to flex. The line used to find proper placement has only enough weight or tension to be able to see where the guides should be placed for the

I was thinking of something small and flat like you mentioned john, getting the height right I don't think will be too much of a problem. I tried putting a phesant tail into the wraps. Feathers for the tail are not a problem. The body on the other hand has still eluded me from a good solution. To get the phesant material twisted and with the right taper and silver wire wrapped and keeping it

After spending some time on the water learning a specific nymphing technique, my dad asked me to build a 10' 5wt for him. So I was thinking of different ways to make this rod unique and I came across the follow pic in the gallery:
Anyway, I love that effect, I would love to learn how to do this to the same level that Terry has. But I got to thinking about it, why not tie bugs into th

388. Re: Tiger Wrap
First post, so please forgive me if I'm out of line. I have built only 1 rod so far, with numbers twp and three in progess and a 4th still in the shipping tube. I have decided to put the tiger wraps in the space between the split grips. I have been using a 1/4" aluminum rod to align cork when building handles and I've found that this is a great medium to practice all kinds of thread techn
