If your looking to really cast 16oz weights (not just lob them). Then I would see if you can cut a foot off the bottom of a wheels reels blank called the NAIL. From fishing experience, casting anything over 12oz is extremely difficult and requires large shock leaders (80lbs absolute minimum, 160lbs if you follow the 10lb per ounce rule that someone picked out of the air). Just remember that

I don't know much about rod building, but this is a subject I can help with! I have tried almost every line out there over the years, from trout fishing small streams in PA to off-shore stuff. without a doubt the line you want to use is sufix tritanium plus(any color). This line is grand daddy of durability and it has little memory to it. Your two biggest challenges are line twist from re

I watched one of Doc Ski's video's I purchased at mud hole and at the end when he was going over drying the finish he had a dryer rack that had 4 rods on it. The bottom chuck was a normal 3 or 4 bolts holding the rod, but the upper three had some sort of rubber diaphragm or something on it that it basically self centered and just popped into the chuck. My question, does anyone know the sp

If you are worried about stuff being in water there is a better choice than distilled. Its called sterile water. The problem is getting it, many many places stopped selling it because people where using it to manufacture illegal substances. Distilled is a good choice, just wanted to throw out the sterile water idea.

Just FYI: Surf fisherman usually pick their rods by how much weight they are planning to throw with it. The line rating is pretty useless when it comes to surf rods. There is a huge difference in a surf rod that is designed to throw 2 or 3oz lures as opposed to launching 8oz of lead and bait a 100 yards into the ocean! Let us know what your relative plans to do with this surf rod and I

Thanks for the replys from everyone. I am more interested in learning why you should use certain guides. I was only using the 1569 as an example because it will be the first rod I build. Steve Gardner here are the answers to your questions: 1- Launching 8 and bait as far as possible fishing in the surf of Assateague Island (MD) 2- 17lb Sufix Tri Plus 3- 50lb berkely big game (elect

Ok, so I been reading and reading for a couple months now. I have Tom's book and read it a couple times. I see a lot of info on guide spacing and guide types but the one thing I can't seem to find any information on is how to pick the guide sizes for a rod. What am I missing here? I know the generalizations such as spinning rods usually have bigger guides than casting rods, but I am afte

I am not going to comment on how someone wants to run their own site that they pay for, but I will make one comment as an IT professional. Tom, you really need to look into different hosting options, as others have said it should not cost tons of money each month to run this site. Just explore your options! Personally if this was my site, I would be running it on a couple of linux servers out

I have used a Rainshadow SU1569 to throw 12 and 14oz weights with big Bunker heads while surf fishing. It did a remarkable job and I think thats going to be your best bet. I have also heard good things about the "NAIL" but I have not personally used it so I won't comment any further.
