Chris, shoot me an email. I have the same issues on trolling rods, I have a solution that I can email you a photo of. If I could figure out the photo thing here, I would post it.

It isn't just the thinners/solvents that are dangerous. The results of mixing things like Acetone and Epoxy during cleanup make the particle sizes small enought to penetrate skin poors, not to mention several of the cheap nitrile gloves. I am living proof that sloppy shop practices can do serious damage. Three trips to the ER in as many days from epoxy sensitivity allergic reaction has change

I am kind of with the above post. For downrigger use, there is no need to spend the bucks for a St. Croix blank unless you get style points at the cleaning station. The Batson RDR's, Forecast SPG845, BP's, or any other glass blank will do fine for downrigger salmon action. What size fish and at what depths are being targeted? The new MHX downrigger blanks have been awesome for my customers la

I have a few of the MHX glass rods fishing on Lake Michigan. The 9' and 9'6 models are the perfect rod for cores and copper on boards. The 8'6" works very well for the riggers. It takes a nice uniform bend and loads up nice in a rigger. All of mine are spiral. I am kind of curious to try one of the 12-25# graphite versions as a low diver rod. Todd would that work, or not enough spine f

I had the pleasure to build on the "downrigger" 9'0 blanks. They are one of, if not, the best board rods I have built to date. I can see all of my copper and leadcore rods utilizing these blanks. I did build one of the 8'6" blanks up for a downrigger application and it worked just as advertised with a great parabolic looking bend in the rigger and good power to lift fish up from

Karen, I think it was you that I bought them from. I remembered your name but couldn't remember from where you were. I bought a few from you that were "ready to fish". I have a retail deal, and I was hoping to get my hands on a bunch of them again. My wholesale house that I purchase retail rods (Shimano, Diawa, Okuma, etc...) doesn't list ice rods, so just hoping someone on here had

A couple of years back, I purchased a few St. Croix ice rods from a supplier/sponsor. I am interested in purchasing a bunch of them again if they are still available? I can't seem to find the invoice!!

I am from the Saginaw/Frankenmuth area. I have only seen a couple versions of the blanks, but if the rest are as good as these two, there won't be much of a need for any others to fill voids. Hopefully they a few for diver rod applications as well.

Just got home from fishing Holland Michigan for some Lake Michigan silver fish. The lake didn't dissappoint us. The goal was to bend a few of the new MHX glass blanks designed for trolling. I can say that the MHX blanks were just as billed, awesome for Great Lakes trolling. Very nice soft actions, with plenty of power in the butt end. We pulled copper and leadcore off inlines and the rods pe

Thats a good idea with lots of different variances out there. An excited angler will try to reel the whole diver/flasher to the reel. With wire, it is a pretty good clunk when it hits the tip guide. Another reason the twilly is so effective, basically a door stopper spring.

I forgot to mention that I use one of two tips for wire. The Twilly tip or door stopper is very effective at controlling the wire and is the most popular. I do use the standard SN tip guides also and see a minimal amount more of line twist over time, but not much. Roller tips are a big no go with guide on top setup. Rod twist will guarantee the wire jumping the roller, even with the "swi

Steve, I put around 30 of those in service each year. Two ways to go with guides. First, like you said is rollers. For the reasons you mentioned, stay away from the bargain rollers, the wire will get off the roller and between the frame. My favorites have been the All American Roller guides, nice balance of affordability and quality. Make sure you pick a blank that has an abundance of spi

Epoxy plus acetone equals trip to emergency room eventually. I found that out with a smallpox like reaction that took a second trip and IV steroids to clear up. I now have ventilation fans pulling air off my work bench along with outside air in from opposite end of shop. Started using respirator while mixing and applying epoxys. Gloves, and long sleeves also. So far no repeat visits.

Yep, my personal set has double foot transition guides, then all singlefoots to the tip. Really, for walleye off big boards or just over the side in a holder, no reason single foots can't be used in the transition either. Double foot guides will take a little more banging around or light abuse than the singlefoots, but for the fishing application, no reason for doubles. If you treat your rods

Ditto on the RDR70M. Also the Batson SPG series has a few nice glass one piece blanks that work very well for walleye trolling rods. Any good casting guides will do. I have been running a 10mm, 8mm, 10mm for simple spiral, then one 8mm and finish with 6mm's. If they will be runnig braid, as many do here on Saginaw Bay, I step up to zirconia rings for durability, otherwise aluminum oxide or h

I have been doing glowing tips on downrigger and diver rods for two years. I have a guy that paints the various spoons used on the Great Lakes do the tips for me. Sorry, can't say for sure what products he is using, other than it is a two part system. I can say that the yellow glows like a light sabre for at least two hours. The light blue is somewhat less brilliant, but still has a warm glow

Just wanted to thank those that helped get me back in the shop after a serious reaction to epoxy. I finally got up the nerve after a three week vacation away from the shop to do a couple of grips last night. Put on the PPE, started the air vents, and so far today, no reaction. Several board members offered advice on how to deal with epoxy sensitivity and a couple even called, so to those, and

I build a bunch of these rods, some 20 so far this year. Not to be argumentative, but ceramics will not hold up at all, unless your talking about Silicon Nitride. I have a pile of factory ceramics in my shop that are grooved all the way to and sometimes cutting the frames. 7 strand SS wire on Mag dipsys will eat guides for lunch. The Silicon Nitride II guides I have running on a couple of cha

Very happy to announce that my sponsored Pro Division Salmon team successfully defended their 2009 Onekema Shakedown tourny victory Friday and Saturday out of Onekema Michigan. I have sponsored these guys (Team Verdict) for two years now and they have been all but running the table in the ultra competitive Pro Division. Lots of sponsors of this board have parts in this, Batson, Lamiglass, Mudho

Purchase a good eglass cheap blank and cut the tip section for use as ice rod. I have chopped several SPG845's for this type of application.

Update: Back in the ER tonight-elephant man look came back with a vengeance this afternoon. Larger dosage of Solumedrol this time and 5 days of Prednosone. My big surprise is that the ER doctor had no idea or information about epoxy allergy. Thanks for the phone calls and the information Bill and Todd. Hopefully this treatment takes care of it. Will see an allergist after the weekend.

Thanks guys. I looked like the elephant man yesterday morning! Mostly cleared up today, still itch bad in some of the worst areas. Will probably get tested to know for sure. Definetly have to start a safer program in my shop for handling the bad sutff.

SPG845 would be perfection for that application. The telescoping RDR8' would also work well, however I have never built on one of them, so I hesitate to be too pushy about that particular blank. I have several core rods built on their RDR96MH and RDR86MH that are great rods. The RDR's will be slightly faster action than the SPG series. I use the SPG's for rigger rods, they are my go to for th

Recently had an allergic reaction to an unknown. I broke out all over, and I mean all over with hyves. My doctors changed both of my prescriptions and gave me Cortazol injections-OUCH! My question is this-I have heard discussion here about epoxy causing health issues over time. Can anyone shed some light on this and what the symptoms are with it? Sorry about the general nature of the quest

I burned through two sets of sample packs and now have it on over 30 rods. I love the pot life. I can coat a 9'6" leadcore rod with double foots in one batch, no worries and I am much slower than many. It doesn't seem to pull away from the edges like some of the other finishes. Most of the bubbles pop on their own, sorry Todd, no need for the bubble buster on your epoxy LOL. It is price
