9', 4pc, 6wt, 12, 8, and #1 running guides (SF). The holo underwrap would be holding the guide feet, then there would be the extra layer of thread to get the holo effect (plus the extra epoxy). I've been practicing on a busted blank to see how thin I can get the epoxy and still get the effects. I put on two real thin coats over the first layer of threads, just enough to get a smooth surface aft

332. Tiger Wrap on Guides
I'm fixing to build a couple Tiger Eye fly rods and thought a tiger wrap on the guides would look neat in gold and copper or something like that. I didn't find anything in the archives specifically about holo wrapping the guides. I did order the Rodmaker mag with he holo/tiger article but thought I'd experiment while I'm waiting.
The thin rod and short length of a guide wrap didn't give me m

I thought the graphite rings were too big and bulky on my ultra lite and agree that duct tape is too "ghetto" for a nice rod so I'm trying an experiment...
I positioned the reel, wrapped it with a layer of aluminum foil, then wrapped the reel legs and handle with wrapping thread and covered with two coats of CP. After it dried I peeled off the aluminum foil, wriggled the reel out fro

334. Schneider's Rod Shop
More kudos; Ron Schneider of the Schneider's Rod Shop emailed me to question an order I placed. I had a typo on the guides I was ordering which would have resulted in the wrong sized running guides and he caught it. Most places I've dealt with would see a part number and simly fill it. Thanks Ron. It really pays to deal with folks that know what they're doing.

335. Bingham Enterprises
I just ordered some Fish Hawk metallic threads from Bingham Enterprises (in the Sponsors listing on this site). The thread is discontinued and their customer service took the time to confirm availability of the colors I wanted. Very plesant customer service; they'll definately get repeat business from me.

> all of the heavy weights jumping in and helping...
I do appretiate it!
I did find the Fish Hawk thread...
I'll get some of both the Gudebrod HT A and the Fish Hawk and try them both.
I'll reduce the tension.
And I was probably a bit too rough as I was positioning the threads at each wrap.
Thanks guys!

I used PCStitch to lay out names for weaving into a pair of fly rods and have been practicing it on an old rod. The characters come out very nicely. I wanted to do the lettering in gold metallic. I'm using Pacific Bay M100A-GD thread and the metallic part looks like tiny little flakes attached to the floss. As I fold the thread back and forth during the weave the little flakes have a tendancy

I'm in; but it's easy for me 'cause I'm a newby and every rod is one I haven't built yet :) Just finished a lite bass rod, a flippin stick, and am now putting the finishing touches on a Mo inspired ultra-ultra-lite. I was fishing with my nephew up in PA and he talked me into a matched set of fly rods for him and his father; I've never fly fished so I'll be pestering youz guyz when I'm figuring

I checked out your downloadable catalog. For a newbie like myself it's nice to see somebody put in text that explains the components instead of just the usual marketing hype. Your catalog is detailed enough to be quite educational. Thank you for that extra detail. The selection is great and the pricing appears to be very good too. And pretty pictures! I'll have to give youz guyz my next rod

I just received my new rod parts. They were packaged in a PVC tube and the end of the tube was crimped. The butt end of the blank is crushed. So am I. Now I gotta wait for the relpacement. Guess I'll think about my next rod while I'm waiting :) I can see where this could get to be an expensive hobby!

341. Re: val fabian
FWIW (newby here). On one rod I just finished I marked out the guides with the blank bent to spline it. I did the underwraps and then eyeballed the guides to their marks and made the overwraps. Then before I put any color preserver on them I adjusted them by sighting down through the guides. A little push here, a little tug there, and they look like a bullseye. On a second pole I made my mar

OK, I'm planning to use the FUJI BLAG 6J for the tip, BYAG GUIDES: 16J, 12J, 10J, 8J (not sure I'll need both the 12 & 10 but got 'em just in case), Cork Grip (will cut down to about 6~8"), Slip Rings (cause I just don't trust tape), a ST CROIX SCII 2SULM Blank and it's all gonna be topped off with a Bass Pro Shops® TinyLite™ Spinning Reel w/4lb Spiderwire. Was thinking about it yest

343. UL UL Rod Tip Guide
I want to put together an ultra ultra lite spin rod. I read the post "UL UL idea for Mo Yang". I like the idea of using a regular small guide instead of a tip top. Is there any special technique required in wrapping it? Does it matter if the end of the blank is exposed or how do you cover it?

I can tell I've got some mishaps... I mean learning... ahead of me. Does gluing newspaper to the table count? Oh... I don't have a drying rig so there I was watching TV in my recliner with the rod supported between my toes as I slowly turned the rod. Nice and comphy until I got my toes too close to a drying guide wrap. Fortune smiled on me this time because it was dry enough to not make a mes

I just finished my first rod (7' spinning). Nothing to wright home about and I wouldn't dare post pics but I thought I'd share some learning experiences that you more experienced guys may forget to pass on...
Childrens plastic sissors don't work worth a darn.
A dremmel tool does a great job of grinding down the guide feet but the metal gets VERY hot (I'm outt'a burn cream, had to use butte
