What do your guide wraps look like where you've used snake guides on heavily used fly rods? Mine were getting scuffed enough to warrant re-wrapping after a few years of heavy use. This is because wire guides do nothing to prevent your line from abrading the top of the guide foot wraps during hauls on your forward casting stroke. I've switched to single foot 'F' style guides and have eliminated

Just built a 9' 6wt 4pc on their copper blank. The AA = 68; ERN = 6.76. The copper finish is gorgeous!

I know you’re just getting started, but when you consider the price of the drill and grizzly lathe, you’ll be about half way to the price of a Jet mini or midi lathe when one of the big woodworking suppliers has a sale. I bet that when you get better and want to start using alternative materials like wood, birch bark, and acrylic, you’ll realize the limitations of these ultra basic drill-based

His publications have expanded my knowledge one hundred fold! His absence from this craft will be greatly missed. A Pioneer if there ever was one!

I usually think of this as more of a “cat toy” with a feather tied to a string tied to the end of a wand, but I’ve thought about taking a 3’6” light ice fishing blank and mounting a very small real seat with aluminum slip rings and a 5” grip and about 5 guides plus top and a tiny fly reel loaded with the level rear section of old scrap fly line attached to a thread- based furled leader. I’d use

Have you considered the Anglers Workshop Chalkstream Light blanks? I believe that Talon makes these blanks. They have a 7’1” 2/3 wt that may fill this niche. If you haven’t built on a TFO blank before, you should be made aware that they put a rather large inscription advertising their company and blank model that is impossible to remove (unless you remove the paint) and would take a lot of th

My 9ft 4wt 4pc Affinity X has an ERN of 5.05 with an AA of 69 degrees. Fast and starts to load well with a typical wf4 line at about 40 feet. I'm looking to load it with one of those "half line weight heavier than industry standard", so that it loads a little closer.

"And any thoughts for an end cap if used up-locking?"
Consider shortening the threaded portion of the reel seat. You don't need any more than what's necessary for fitting your reel with the locking nut fully open or "unscrewed". Then, you can add a short fighting butt/extended bumper directly to the blank. I do this on every fly rod I build.

$35 for shipping is rather steep, considering that there are blanks coming from New Zealand are $30 for shipping. Local shipping at that rate tells me its far overpriced, especially for an ice rod blank. Plus, they're advertising charging for FET. I'm not a fan of passing the buck. I was looking at their fly rod blanks until I saw both their shipping charges AND FET. I'd shop elsewhere.

I build all of my grips with burled cork and acrylic. I glue up all of my grip pieces comprised of blocks of birch bark and burled cork and bands of acrylic . I then use lathe tools to get the general shape I'm after and then spend some time sanding with various grits. After final sanding, I buff my thin acrylic bands by rotating the handle at a very slow setting and run my dremmel tool with

And now there's the CERecoil. A ceramic ring affixed to a Recoil wire frame. Perhaps the lightest ceramics yet for a fly rod.

I use the RSPG on flyrods due to the very observation Sid stated above - "....snake guides on fly rods don't really hold the line off the blank when casting...." This is evident on every old fly rod I had that had snake guides where the finish on top of the guide feet had worn from contact with "dirty" fly line. The RSPG's complete full circle stands off the blank far enough
