They are using a heavy duty stamped hook keeper, along with a pretty good sized solid (welded) metal ring. If you are using a trigger reel seat, my preference is to drill a hole in the trigger for a place to attache a lanyard. The palm support reel seats work really well for this since the "trigger" is very large and can accomodate a large hole for a lanyard and a smaller hole abo

Here is the pic of where my guides fractured while grinding them. I really think vibration had something to do with it because it really happened quickly before any significant amount of heat could have built up. I was holding the guide by the small foot with a small clamp during grinding. Whatever the cause, two guides in a row broke in the same location... a location which would be expec

I'm the one that posted the guide struts cracking while grinding the buide feet. I believe it was caused by producing just the right frequency of vibration when grinding the feet on my disc sander... the Fuji engineers couldn't even produce it even though I produced it twice in a row. Since these are stamped rings, there are no welds, but there is a heck of a lot of stress in the metal where t

Owen is right that the respirator needs to be suited to the type of contaminants you are encountering. However, the P1, P2, and P3 ratings are Austrailian ratings that you may not see in the states. The NIOSH ratings used in the US are different. For epoxy work, you'd want a cartridge rated for the type of vapors you expect to have present. For most of the two part finishes we use in rodb

Marc, it depends on what kind of epoxy or glue you are working with. The 2-part epoxies have significant odors often have amine-based hardners, and it is the amines that are causing the odors. In that case, an amine cartridge would be appropriate. For varnishes it is organic vapors. For superglue it is acrylates. Just depends on the material you are talking about. The multi-purpose cartr

Bill... glad that whole Fume versus Vapor thing got through to you. As an Industrial Hygienist, I used to do a ton of respirator training, which always included pounding on that concept.

Purple cartridges are NOT for organic vapors. Purple cartridges are P-100 (also known as HEPA) cartridges which are filters for particulates (dusts, mists, and fumes). Vapors are not particulates and will pass directly through a filter. Whatever brand, you want a cartridge that is rated for Organic Vapors. With Survivair and many other brands, that is the black cartridge. Personally an

You might consider REC's aluminum spinning reel seats. They aren't nearly as bulky as the typical Aftco and similar aluminum reel seats and probably pretty comfortable in the hand. (PNA875 or the SPN875). You could also consider the Fuji Cobra Graphite version of the NPS seat which might might be stronger than the standard graphite composite version (not sure, just speculating here... the

Here's a kayak rod I posted the other day on the photo page. There are a few things you can do to make it special. One is to try to design it to float by putting an oversized EVA foregrip. Sometimes this works, other times it's just not possible. The rod I posted will float the rod plus an ABU6500CL3 reel plus a couple ounces of lead. Another (especially if floatation is out of quest

Personally, I'd like to thank Bill for being generous enough to share this technique with the rodbuilding community. As is his right, he very easily could have just kept it to himself and his customers but, like other generous folks who contribute to this board and to RM magazine, he generously put it out there for all of us. Whenever something as out-of-the ordinary as this comes up, there

Ethanol = Grain Alcohol... the type in alcoholic beverages. It is the main component of Denatured Alcohol (which is denatured to make it unfit for consumption and hence not subject to the ATF regulations and alcohol taxes

Can anyone direct me to a source for rod blank butt sections that could be used for assembling into gaffs? I'm looking for Butt sections up to 24" long, preferably with a butt diameter of 0.75" or larger. Graphite or Fiberglass... doesn't matter. Maybe some defect, damaged, or scrap blanks that I can salvage the butt section from? Thanks for any pointers. Erik
