Any info from someone who's built the Gator 10-30? I am wondering if the tip and butt ratings are anywhere near accurate. IN particular I am interested in the 7.5 foot model. Thanks.

Sean,
AS usual, thanks for the info. I understand what you mean about the drag pressure thing. However, it would be nice to have a rod that truly loads at the tip at 12 pounds and at the butt at 50 for the added butt power. I do not quite follow your logic int he explanation because I've redlined many rods before and so long as one doesn't pass 90 degrees, it's quite difficult to snap a l

Sean,
So, the Mudhole listing is of several rods of differing lengths of 12-50 from Gator Glass is inaccurate? I believe this one is item numbered as the B12-50-76. I also saw a 10-30 in differing lengths with an advertised x-tra fast action and a 15-50 with advertised x-tra fast action. the 12-50s were all just advertised as fast. I know the 12-50s in the catalog vary by u to a foot

I am interested to build the Gatorglass 7'6" 12-50 pound blank. I was wondering if anyone who has built on this blank before could comment on how accurate the manufacturer's ratings of the 12 pound tip and 50 pound butt were, how fast the action of the the blank actually is in comparison to industry standards set by companies such as Calstar, St. Croix, etc., and if they could possibly show

I agree.Ugly Stick was a bit much...But they are good bait blanks in salt water. And really tough too.

For those of you who have built on and fished Gatorglass rods and put them through the paces:
I am wondering how do the gatorglass rods stand up as far as durability and reliability in comparison to the more well-known and prestigious names such as Calstar, Seeker, Ugly Stik, etc. Thanks. I am interested in a gatorglass blank that sports attributes I can't find in other blanks.

This is how I do it. You can use any spray pant including krylon. After applying your coats of paint, spray on a clear coat. After that, let it dry for 24 hours. Then use epoxy varnish wearing a latex glove without powder and squeeze it into the blank while moving your hand up or down the rod. I generally squeeze both directions depending on the thickness of the rod versus my hand size. Thi

I have been eyeing these blanks to use for SE Asian bottom fishing. We just leave the rods in the rod bolder and crank when a fish bites. I am looking for a rod with a moderate action for easier bite detection and a strong butt section for when the occasional monster climbs on. I have used game rods in the past but keep going back to more moderate action rods. I have not built on a rock cod b

Gatorglass ....the heavy kingfish model rated for 15-50 pound line test. The tip is light enough to detect the bites w/o overly alerting the fish and it's got great butt power...and it's inexpensive. I might be a touch off on the lower end number for the line test. I've been thinking about that blank for a similar application. Just my two cents.

Shawn,
I used to fish a lot in Malaysia. I think i know what you're using the rod for. Honestly, I would still go for the recoils, but since you asked, I think the ceramics you're looking for would be the Fuji titanium framed SiC. There are some models not available in the states that are lighter and more diminutive than the regular ones available in the states. Unfortunately, I'm not

Shawn,
The type of line you're using can make an impact on guide selection, as will reel size/type. I made some shorter noodle rods and tried several guide choices. For regular mono line, the recoil guides are amazing. I used a Shimano 1500 size reel for my sizing on a 7 foot noodle rod. My best results came from a size 25 stripper graduating to a 16, 10, 8, and then 6s for the rest.

I've built on St. Croix inshore blanks, Cape Fears, Loomis, and GUSA rods. I'd say that the 8 foot St. Croixs aren't bad for the money. The perfect rod blank would be an 8 foot e-tra-fast with a medium power. But haven't found such a beast yet. Cheers.

Mike,
No need to get excited. If you've ever flattened guides on a spinning rod due to overstress, you'll see they also flatten towards to the blank. Ask Tom Kirkman about this. the stress goes in. Not sure why that is, just something I've observed. Fly type guides are stronger than bridge guides in my own experience, and even though I've had limited flattening experiences with them, I

Michele,
I've built on this blank a lot and have built for several customers. You will need double-legged guides for every guide. Lose the idea of fly and bridge guides altogether. The Fuji concept is available in all casting style guides. If you are building this for muskie fishing in particular, you don't need titanium framed SiC guides. Alconites are more than adequate. The reas

48. Re: rod balance
Darren,
That's a very personal question. Most people like the rod to balance about where the thumb is at the foregrip with the reel attached and line in the reel. I prefer it a my middle finger same setting. It's up to your personal preference and casting style. What Cliff said is also true. Check the balance with the line on the reel or it'll throw off your experiment.

49. Re: Gator B10-30
Mr. Heaton,
Well, the Gatorglass is a very tough rod. It's got heaps of butt power to move fish. I think to increase your versatility you may wish to switch to a baitrunner of something like that. Either that or a more robust reel, but for now that Daiwa should do so long as the drag is still smooth. My major worry is the fish getting into the snags. I would personally go with a nyl

Mr. Heaton,
What reel are you planning on using? I've chased the barramundi a lot. The rod you've asked about can cast fairly well if built up for it. Forget about the 'B' thing. Just concentrate on the fact that it's a 10-30 pound rod described as x-tra fast kingfish rod meaning it'll work well chasing spaniards as well as queenies, trevally, MJs, estuary cod, pretty decent sized jewf

Hi all,
I've been searching high and low. The blue 48 inch HT enterprises hole jumping ice rod has the exact power and action I am looking for, but it's only 48 inches long. The longest blank of this type I've been able to find is 50 inches. For the uses I have in mind either tubular or solid glass are fine but hoping to find something at least 5 to 7 feet long non-spliced rated for 1-4

Billy,
Yes, a blank can be painted without sacrificing too much. It has to be done correctly with a sensitive touch but it can be done. Obviously, even wrapping guides on a rod will affect the blank. . The question is how noticeable? Start with a high quality spray paint and do very quick and even coats....thin coats. Obviously this depends on the original balnk color and the intended

Doug,
Is this an ultralight or a spinfly rod? Spiinfly rods I think may have started in New Zealand and are gaining popularity worldwide....lighter than ultralights, throw lighter baits than ultralights, and tend to cast farther as well....

Need some help here.
Selecting a grouper rod for fishing in Straits of Melacca in West Malayia. Estimated size of the giant cod(as Aussies call 'em) is about 300 pounds or so in between 250-300 feet of water. We fish in the asian bottom fishing style with rods in the rod holders. We need to stop the fish from going back into the wrecks. What rods would you guys use? Thanks in advance.
