Last winter I built a fly rod and used single foot snake guides. I fished the rod extensively this past summer and I have noticed that the line is rubbing on the guide wraps. It seems to me that the salesman's comments are valid.
I've seen some single foot snakes that have a small extension between the foot and the guide ring. That would get the ring up off the blank but that set-up looks

James, don't you have to cover the printed decal with acrylic clear spray before you wet and mount it
Tim, Yeah, Photoshop costs $900 bucks but unless you're doing professional photography, you just don't need all of that capability. You can get Photoshop Elements, which is a very powerful program for around $80.

Thanks David! I've worked with printers and water slide decals before with limited success. Your method sounds like it should work!

From a fishing standpoint, I really don't have a preference with up or down locking seats but from a security standpoint, I do. All my surf fishing rods are up locking because when they're being carried in my vehicle mounted surf rack, the reel seat nut is down inside the rod tube. That way, when the rods are locked in the rack with plastic coated wire cable wrapped around the rod, thieves cann

I'm still in the hunt for a six and a half foot fly rod that will handle a six weight line. When I asked about a 6'6" 6wt a couple of weeks ago, someone mentioned about dropping the butt section to make a shorter rod but I guess at that time, the math just didn't sink in! This morning I was reading the "blunders" thread and I realized that if I got a 9' four section rod and just

Sencer, The line weight designation on the Shakespeare is FBM. I've looked in the literature for that designation and tried to contact Shakespeare but I was never able to find anything and Shakespeare never got back to me. A long time ago, like 40 years......I took the rod to a local tackle shop where I was living at that time to see what line would be suitable for this little rod. They had a

I've been using a 50's vintage Shakespeare Wonderod, 6'6" for a 6 wt. I fish several small streams where this rod is ideal. It's small enough to cast easily in the brush and the 6wt. line lets me use larger streamers. (There are big trout in these streams)
This rod has a lot of sentimental value in that it was my brother's who was killed in an auto accident when he was just 18. I supp

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. You guys have been a lot of help.
Yeah, the 50mm guide is the toughy. I've used the alocnite BMNAG guides on three conventional surf sticks and I'm very pleased with them. I think they'd work just fine but they only go up to 40mm. I could just start with the 40mm instead of the 50mm but this is my go-to rod I use in surf tourneys and sometimes casting

I need to replace the guides on an 11'6" surf spinning rod that I have. The rod is a Breakaway blank and sold by Cabela's. The insert in the gathering guide has cracked and the flex coat (or whatever it is) is flaking off most of the guide feet.
The rod casts very well with the current guide size and placement so I'm probably going to just replicate what's already on there but I am open

Just got done building two surf rods with EVA grips and I don't have a lathe.
I first cut the grips to length with a serrated knife, then squared up the ends with coarse sandpaper. Then I slide the grips on a large dowel (actually a broomstick) and then clamped the dowel in my bench vise. I'd work on one area of the grip then turn the dowel 90 degrees and blend in the next section, then turn

I've got the 10'6" Tica and like it a lot. It's long enough that you can get good distance but it's still light enough that it can be used for tossing arti's. The Tica's are a great value for the money, until the guide inserts crack or fall out. I've only replaced the tip top on my 11'6" so far but other guys have had to replace more. Even with the bad guides, the rod is still wort

42. Re: EVA question
I'm surprised Hobby Lobby doesn't have it.
Try www.towerhobbies.com and look for K&S tubing.
On another subject, I want to thank all the posters here for the help. I'm working on my third surf rod now and I've picked up a ton of tips from this board. Thank You!
