Todd, just posted a couple pics of Tiger Wraps. You can see how white the NCP White A thread stays with no CP on it. Again, the key thing is loose enough base wraps of contrasting colors that you can move them around for that 'moire / 3 - look. Good luck.

Todd, I have done a lot of Tiger Wraps with Metalics, Rainbow Metalics, 3 Thread base wraps and have basically evolved back to Gudebrod Black A with NCP White A as the base wrap. I tend to get the most striking Holo effect with that black and white base. Wrap this base fairly loose so you can move it around a lot when done. Put 3 coats of finish on it. Wrap the top with your Blue Dun and a sa

Dan, I cleaned the guide foot with denatured and then put very sticky tape down to hold it. Filed the toe of the foot just enough to make it very flat. Left enough space on the blank for a Forhan Lock and a couple of of backer wraps. These have held up well as tip tops.Date: Wed November 12, 2008 · Views: 480 · Filesize: 24.2kb, 51.1kb · Dimensions: 720 x 570 ·

Chris, unhide your email and I will touch base with you about making these ramps. Metal Winding Checks are usually put on to be seen as a little flair. For it to be wrapped over with a green thread would appear to be a re-do of some sort. Anyway, to make an epoxy ramp about that size would be fairly easy once you've got the material, steps and sequence down. I built a larger ramp on my old b

Tom, late at night and I double posted a photo. Went back in and tried to delete it but I was denied permission to do so. Could you remove one of those duplicate Hook Keeper photos? Thanks

Using denatured alcohol was discouraged in an earlier post. I need to clean off an old bamboo rod. What are some of the safer options I have to do this? Thanks

Ronald. when it is set up up-locking, your pointer finger is consistantly in the same spot on the foregrip-rod butt area ( even if you change reels as long as they are somewhat similar). Also, pointer finger is more consistantly in a spot to 'feel' the line. Down-locking can put you more in a position where your fingers are feeling the threads of your reel seat. Personal preference and habit

Very interesting Bob. I went down to my little cave rod room and measured the distance from spool to the # 20 high frame strpper I have on a micro spin rod I'm finishing. ( Picture of this stripper is currently on the photo page) I set it up several days ago to fit a Shimano 1000. 18" out to stripper is what came up the best with a New Concept style. This on a 6' Lamiglas.

A couple of years ago, after a nice visit and rod building tip session with Ray Adams, he gave me a set of micro runners. They were much smaller than anything I had ever seen. ( 3.5) Using some of the current advice at that time to: 'use the smallest guide that will get the job done' ... I stripped down my go-to spin rod [ SC111 5'6 ML ) and I put a Tenn handle on it, Split Grip and use

Ray, with your wonderful rod building skills, I am glad to see you getting deeper into this fun addiction. The Rods look really sweet. Your Saramento area has some very nice trout fishing and your connections to Southern Idaho put you in some great trout water too ! Casting a fly rod is not a big thing. Network with a fly fishing friend and you'll have the basics down in no time. Other b

Rolly, I've done micros on a half dozen rods over the last two years. I have a very difficult time getting the size A thread to start up the foot if I have not prepped it just a little AND I have to have a little bit of a brace (wad of good sticky masking tape pressing against the front of the guide). After I get a couple wraps up the foot , it is fairly simple from there. I only put one Forha

Always good to meet, learn and share with other builders. As usual I picked up some new, exciting hints, ideas. Time seemed to go by too quickly. Thanks Bill S, Lance D, Tom K for your gift contributions. There's going be another micro guide rod in the Midwest Bill. Chuck and Byron and helpers, you put on a fine program.

Ken, what ia an average size bass in your area? Will you be fishing mostly from a boat or shore? Are there big bluegill in your main waters too? You're going to enjoy this venture!

John, when building the ultra lite spinning outfit for my own fishing, I build it light as possible. I use single foot titanium guides for the stripper and second guide and then micro guides for the runners. All are wrapped with a Forhan lock wrap. The stripper is 1/2 the diam. of the reel spool. When others use that rod, they want a rod that has the same light / sensitive type feel. The fo

Aaron, I have tried all kinds of combinations for Tiger Wraps. It is fun and educational. I have evolved back to basics with it and have my very best results when I use size A Black Gudebrod and size A NCP White as the bottom two wraps. I do put a coat of CP on those. Then two more coats of finish. Whatever color thread I use for the top wrap ( remember this is in the reverse direction an

Did a quick fix for a new hook keeper on an old farm pond rod I let summer camp kids beat to pieces. I was in a hurry and used a small single foot guide for this keeper. I put it on the side of the butt with the foot facing the tip. Decided to wrap it from the guide eye back to the foot. Started with two lock down wraps, then a couple Forhan figure eights wraps, then down the foot to the toe

Doing a casting rod for a friend. 7' Medium power Batson blank. 13" split grip handle. Tried to talk him in to doing a spiral. He doesn't want it. He is not sure what size casting reel he will get for it. Says he will mostly troll with it in his hand while in a small boat, I have done very few casting rods and those have all been spiral. I've got a 16 double foot stipper a 10 single

I have been getting asked to do some repair work. Is there an easier souce for old fiberglass rods than visiting garage sales I have used up my casche of fiberglas. Can a grtaphite sleeve be doctored or reinforced a littlre differnly and be expected to hold in non abusive use?

Have any of you already experimented with mixing equal amounts of TM lite and TM reg? I like the lite but the waiting time is annoying when I'm in a rush. Wondering if a half and half mix would work, still be super clear, take a little less time to cure and and have little bubble issues? Thanks

Jeff, you got some very good advice from from Mike. With Tom's book, this forum and taking your time, you will create a new comfort zone. Build the first rod for yourself. A type of rod for fishing you are familiar with. Doesn't have to be real expensive components. There are a lot of nice blanks and components for very reasonable cost.... that make for a great fishing stick. Think in terms

From a black plastic CD cover case, you can cut several rings. A good 1/4" paper punch can pop the hole thru the center. These will make a very thin, light and strong trim ring.

Bryan, when I started building, a rod builder friend told me to apply epoxy with a brush. I did and I brushed it on...... I painted it on. It worked and I thought my finish work was ok but not great... but it was as good as my friends finish. Then I found the forum, and so many helpful experienced builders. Then I saw the photos. My finish was not as good as so many of the photos. Then I w

When it was obvious Gudebrod 811 was going South fast, there were numerous testimonials and dissapointments written over their new product. I am not sure how deep the cave one from Gudebrod would have to be living in, to have missed the huge amount of negative feedback BUT I remember seeing or hearing nothing from them on the subject. I found that to be very peculiar. I then assumed that the

Barton, I have tinkered and tweaked with the epoxy and thread suggestions to the tune of approx 30 tiger wraps now. Most of my creative potential improvements, to the original great explanations in the Rod Maker article, have ended up 'Ho Hum' or B- at best. My last four have ended up quite striking and they are based (like Tom mentioned) with Black and White or Black and Yellow on the bottom a
