1831. Re: guide ring hardness
I have these guides on my Fenwick 6'6 ML spinning rod. They are nice and light. It has not seen much use so time will tell how they wear. I just checked Fenwick's site, and they are on every freshwater spinning or casting rod I checked. I suppose that on some rods, lightweight and inexpensive is a trade-off that might be acceptable? I may use some on ML panfish rods.

1832. Re: Another blank search
It is funny how things change. Come to think of it, this rod goes back to the days of the 60" beam walleye boats. In today's 90" wide boats the jig might be in the baitwell. :)

Thanks Jeff. I thought it was pretty "old school" as well. He's had these two rods for 15 years and they have caught thousands of fish and they are in need of repair.

1834. Another blank search
I have a friend that swears by his Hagen HSC 503 5' MH vertical jigging rods for walleye fishing. I thought it would be a fun project to make one but I can't find a blank that is close to the specs. 5' MH for 4-10 # line, 1/4 - 3/4 oz lures. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Michael,
I bought a bottle of Gudebrod #811 CP because I was at Cabela's and needed some. At first I was a little dissapointed that it had no applicator brush like the brand I used originally. It has a twist-top like an Elmer's glue bottle. Anyway, what a pleasant surprise! I did my most difficult wrap ever (5th wrap - I'm a newb too) and it was a 4-axis, 3 color fade pattern done with

I'm new here so maybe you all knew about this trick. If not, it might help you repair a rod some day.
I have an older Berkely Bionix LR-27 6' MH spinning rod that I like to use for throwing spinner baits. Many years ago the back of the reel seat broke out so I've had to tape the reel in.
I had a spare graphite reel seat sitting on my bench so I thought I'd try a repair. The old reel s

Thanks Bill. I thought of that, too. But it sounds like someone has found one ring that will fit and if so I'd like to go that route. (I'm picky)

Thanks Stan! I found the ball bearing rollers at Menards and Home Depot but searched all over town for O-rings that would fit. The groove is so deep that none of the rings I found will work. Do you have a stock number from MSC that will fit these rollers?

I tried a 3/8" dowel. I thought it was too wimpy. Rather than go through the trouble of sanding and finishing a dowel, stop by an archery range or shop if there is one near you, or maybe you know a bowhunter or two. Carbon fiber arrow shafts work very well, and it's pretty easy to find a damaged one that will work well for wrapping. (Many times they develope a small crack at either end s

1842. Re: wood handle finish
I just did two spinning handles with Minwax spray spar varnish in satin. It is also available in flat & gloss. I put on three coats. Two coats, dry for the time listed on the label, sand any bumps off, then a final coat. It looks good, and spar varnish is supposed to work well outdoors. Next time I'll try epoxy finish to see how that feels. I was worried about it being slippery but fro

Tom, I tried that (bought your book). I had a bit of trouble with knowing how tight to stretch the thread. I also experienced some movement of the thread and had to keep straightening it out. However...it was not NCP. Is NCP low stretch? I didn't have any on hand. I just used white A thread and finally made it work.
I also tried scratching with an awl, but had trouble erasing my mistake

What do you guys use to mark centers on glossy blanks for butt wraps? I've seen some pictures that looked like white ink was used. I've tried white thread and scratching with an awl.
Thanks

1848. Re: new and need advice
I'm pretty new at this too. I spent $35 on a DVD and was dissapointed in it. The best thing I did was spend $14.95 on Tom Kirkman's book (Rod-Building Guide). I bought it at Mudhole. I think if you bought that and the Flex Coat DVD that Tom Kirkman mentioned you will be on your way. Do a search here on this site for any questions you have. Most of it has been asked before, and it is a court

1849. Re: HOW SLOW IS TOO SLOW
Hey Ike! Maybe you should just wait until our tourney before you build a dryer...you just might want to give up fishing. :)
Seriously though - Here is a link to a site with lots of motor possibilities: Click on Motors on the left. I think you can find something for a small single rod dryer or something with enough torque for a drum dryer.
