I do both. An excel sheet listing construction components etc. and a Portfolio.
The portfolio is a simple three ring binder with Photo sleeves. I do one or two 8x10's of each rod.
Really helps people with ideas and sometimes I refer to it for ( how the heck did I do that?)

35. Re: fly seats
A down locking will position the reel farther away from the grip, resulting in more weight transferred to the Butt, Usually desired with Bamboo. An uplocking the opposite, usually preffered with Graphite.

I use a japanese craft saw, but not the flush cut. The flush cut has the offset that I would think makes it less steady. The straight craft saw also has the reversed teeth. no set, is thin and razor sharp. It works for me.

Guys, there is a definite reason for doing football wraps. At least there was when I did a rod with them.
I had a friend that is a huge Nebraska Huskers fan.
I built him a rod and the wraps( as I recall) were 5 turns of brown, 3 turns of white, 11 turns of brown, 3 turns white, and 5 turns brown. I purposely put way too much epoxy on the wraps and turned them at 20 rpm. "Tada" be

OK one last opinion, I too use scalpels and love them. Im not sure if they are sharper than a double edge, but definitely more than a single edge or exacto.
You can buy them all day long on @#$%&. Stainless Handle and 100 blades for under 10 bucks.

I have seen people use tape successfully. Some people don't have the greatest hand coordination and need it. ( I am thinking of trying it.)
I would agree with Jeff above, to stop at the edge of the thread for your initial coats or coats, then on the last one, you can mask it off with Scotch tape, As soon as you are happy with the job and it is complete, carefully remove the tape.

Typically my rods all balance right in the center of the hand. Buy I would not add weight to make a slight correction.

I prefer a Fast action. I have one St Croix SC IV and feel it is medium Fast.
I have found nothing I like better Than Gatti FRTA (Tip Action) Casts like a rocket!!
I tried Sage, Fly Logic, and St Croix
Some say it is just a tad slower than the Sage TCR.

44. Re: Cork?
I checked one time and standard burl cork is almost exactly three times as heavy as regular cork. But remember this added weight is almost perfectly balanced in your hand so does not add to the swing weight much. I think Andy's cork is very similar in weight to standard burl.
There is an issue with Andy's cork though. I think it evaporates! If you have several kinds of cork in boxes or drawers

If it is 1 hour epoxy I would leave it overnight. I use 5 minute and remove it in about 30 minutes. Its on the Lathe in an hour.
