I am currently using an old Craftsman lathe. I am pretty sure it is from the 50's and seems very similar to the description that Roger gave. I had to re-wire the motor, get a new chuck and tailstock. The chuck is a craftsman 4 jaw 3/4 X 16 and the tailstock is a MT2. There are adapters to convert MT1 to MT2 and vice versa if need be. This lathe is absolutely perfect for general wood turning as we

I built a river smallie rod used for soft plastics/ finesse on a St. Croix SCIII blank. Now I'm no expert when it comes to the various blanks but I am COMPLETELY happy with the SCIII! I can feel the difference between a panfish nibbling on the skirt on my tube versus the ever so subtle tap of a smallie picking up my bait ,so that's good enough for me! As for reel seats, your preference sh

Well, someone took down the Veteransoutdoors.org web site as of this afternoon and unless it was someone on the Board of Directors, our missing coordinator is reading this thread!

Thanks for the info! At least we know that Jason really appreciated the rods/tackle! Glad to hear that Jason is walking too!

Well, I did manage to find out that Jason did receive his rods.
The question still remains, "What happened"?

To all concerned~
I was one of the builders for the first DAV recipient, Jason McNamera. I too am wondering what happened and if Jason ever received the rod we did for him. I contacted Mike Barkley who was in the same group of builders as I and he stated that he cannot contact Jeff nor did he hear anything concerning the fruits of our labor! This really irk's me to no end as I am a DAV myself!

I found out the hard way that PG and 3M's blue masking tape DO NOT MIX! It seems there is something in the adhesive in the tape that will eat away a PG finish. Just keep this in mind.

Hello all
I'm getting ready to build my first spiral wrapped rod and I have a few questions about guide selection. I fully understand the spiral concept and how to set it up but I need help with guide selection, specifically the bumper guide. Now I understand this bumper guide needs to be a low frame small ring guide. The problem is that I cannot find any specs such as ring height or frame hei

Yes, you can use drywall tape BUT I would not recommend it. The graphite arbors along with the brick foam arbors are used in the same fashion as the drywall tape and provide a more secure and sensative fit for adhering the reel seat to the blank. As far as extending the butt end of the rod I would recommend using an oversleve from a piece of scap blank or an old rod to extend your butt s

To do this you will need:
Skeleton Seat
Seat Insert or turn down something to use as a set
Graphite or Brick Foam arbors
Winding Check if you want
Slow Cure epoxy
Tapered reamers or Round File
Scotch Brite Pad or 400+ Sandpaper
Denatured Alcohol
If you get these components, when you receive your books you will have everything you need. Just make sure to measure the blank twi

Thanks for the replies. I tend to think it was the tape and not surface prep. I painted the blank and then applied the PG after a few days cure on the paint. When the tape took the PG off, it did so only where the tape was stuck to the blank, kind of like it melted the PG underneath. A perfect strip of PG was taken off only where the tape was. I tried to scratch several places on the blank with m

Well, I just found out that 3M's painter's tape will remove Permagloss from a blank! I was using the tape to do a 4 axis double diamond wrap and had layed out the dimensions three days ago. I went to work on the wrap tonight and found that I had made a calculation error so I removed the tape to reposition the end of the wrap. When I removed the tape it took off the coating of PG that I had applie

Don't feel too bad. I had my fair share of problems with that rod! I ruined 3 checker pieces while boring out the inside diameter! Then glued everything up only to realize that I had the reel seat 180 deg. off from the spine. Luckily I noticed it before the epoxy had set up so it was a quick fix. I think the pressure of this being the first DAV rod along with such a short timeframe has a

Hello Lori
Welcome to the addiction! As far as wrapping goes, yes I still do practice on a dowel rod. It does not matter what you practice on. Some ppl lay the thread out on a square piece of cardboard that has been covered by two sided tape and then lay out the threads to see how 2 or more colors will work together or just to practice a weave pattern. I like the dowel rods, that way you have

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm gonna try it again tommorow and leave it exposed MUCH longer and see if that helps. The logo's that I'm making are pretty small (3/4") so that may be the problem as well.

Hello all!
I'm trying this brass photo etching for the first time and have had poor results so far. I'm looking for any tips on what I may be doing wrong. I followed the article in RM to the letter but am having difficulty getting the emulsion to come off under tap water. I have been brushing for at lest 30 min and the stuff still won't come off. Maybe I applied the emulsion too thick on the

I use an X-Acto knife to slice into the cork being careful not to cut so deep as to get into the blank. Then you can "peel" most of the old cork away. What's left you can use your knife to carefully slice it away. Alterativly you could use a file or sandpaper to remome the small pieces that are left after you get the majority of the old cork off. Just do not sand or file into the blank.

The ones at GW are a little too salty for me. I'm going to build my own out of PVC and sew a nice cover over the PVC. Still haven't decided if i'm going to have a machine shop turn a batch of screw on lids or just fabricate my own system with a zipper or button/latch etc.

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen to my last butt wrap. Only difference was that my FC was not cloudy before mixing. I think you may have over heated the finish causing the MANY tiny bubbles. This is what happened to me. I overheated and the whole wrap looked like you are describing but no trouble with the guide wraps even though I used the same batch for the wrap and guides.

Hello Cody
I just finished my first split grip and boy does it attract attention! As far as where to get these grips, most make their own by turning on a lathe/ drill lathe etc. I have seen tapered butt grips (Jan's Netcraft) for use as a fighting butt on fly rods and I suppose you could buy a fore grip and reverse it so the taper faces the butt grip but I think you would be better served by m

The bumper wrap system allows you to move the line on casting rods to the bottom of the blank by offsetting the second guide thus moving the guides from the top to the bottom reducing the rods natrual twisting property under load. Use the search feature for Bumper Wrap and search for all dates. Welcome aboard!

I would be interested in a discussion on Inlays, Marbeling, and the new bumper wrap. I'll bring the first rod I built and have it critiqued. I did a gold leaf inlay on the split grip so if anyone is interested in this techique I will offer some pointers.

Count me in! I'll be coming from Indianapolis and anyone coming through Indy is welcome to carpool with me. You can park at my house and we can ride up together. Any idea what will be going on at this meeting? I imagine mostly sharing of techniques,@#$%&-ing, telling stories and what not. Anyone interested in the carpool send me an E-Mail.

I use small (1/4 and 3/16) rubber bands from a dentists office (Used for braces). Ask nicely and you will find they generally give them to you, allthough you may get a few odd looks!

I too am on my first rod and did a real nice job on my butt wrap if I must say so (Thanks to Tom's book!). Some pointers I learned while doing the wrap.
1. I used doubled sided sticky tape (3M) wrapped about 2 inches above both ends of the wrap
2. To stick the threads on the tape I would wind the thread around the tape at least 2 times with the second revolution being brought over the
