Right now I am trying the oven idea to see what happens. Just got it set up. I have noticed that the epoxy has hardened a litle more. Since it's just the underwrap and the guides are not on yet I'll make my final decision after I remove it and let it sit a day or two.

Thanks Tom, The original epoxy mix and the better measured batch are night and day different in hardness. The bad batch is no longer tacky but is much softer and more flexible then the second test batch. I applied the epoxy Thursday and it has improved a little over time but when I try to wrap the guide on the thread cuts in and can not be mended. I even backed off on the tension. When I take th

I tried to force cure it by leaving it in the sun for two days and nothing. Even lightly heated with a hairdryer and no change. Guess I better return my wifes hairdryer to her.

So I mixed a batch of light epoxy for my under wraps. I must have miss measured and even though it set it is soft and very flexible. I can press my fingernail into it dent it and then it comes back out. It is not tacky at all. I mixed another batch and let it kick and it is fine. So, do I cut everything off and start over. Mix a new batch and apply a very thin layer over the existing. Or one frie

Now I have to figure out how to keep a 22' push pole turning while it drys. Will let you know how it turns out. Might be a week or two. Thanks for the input.

I have a push pole that the finish has worn off and I have black hands for days. My buddy and I were wondering if one of the flexable epoxies reduced down and sprayed on in a couple of fine coats would work? What are your thoughts

Thanks guys. I've only used NCP with my builds because I tend to like how the thread looks. I'll see what happens.

I know I’ve seen this talked about before but could not find it. Is there any reason I should not use colorfast thread with nylon thread in the same wrap? II want to use color fast white with regular nylon grey. One thing I’ve noticed with the two being same manufacturer and thread size is that the color fast white seems a bit larger in diameter then the grey. Is that just me or is that normal? T

I’ve come across a few things about maybe scuffing the inside of a reel seat for install. Is this something that is recommended or over kill? Also what about metal reel seats that have channels in them? Just curious because I’ve never done it.

Thanks, that's what I ended up ordering was the Alps Xn from size 20-10. It seemed like the right fit, now the waiting game.

I'm building a lite trolling / kite rod for sailfish, dolphin, and kings. It's a SW70M-MHX that will have a 10" butt, 12" fore grip fishing 20lb mono top shot with hollow core backing, or just all mono. The reel will be a Daiwa Saltist 40 or equivalent in size. The baits will primarily be naked ballyhoo trolling, or what ever live bait from a kite. I'm trying to come up with a guide tra

I'm working on laying out a rod and the triangle eva grip I want to use is one or two masking tape wraps loose for the last three inches. I did not reem it, it's just the blank diameter and the manufacturers internal diameter. Could I put a couple masking tape arbors on, or will there be problems with the gaps between them if they don't get enough epoxy in them? I really like the eva grip.

Thanks for the reply’s and input. I picked that blank to throw smaller lures in our small coastal rivers and creeks. I have bigger stronger rod set ups, but trying to cast lighter smaller plugs in close quarters just doesn’t work that well. This build is actually somewhat of an experiment. I should really be building a spinning rod for this, but I love the control of a casting rod in these tight

I guess one of my concerns with the guide size is that if the foot could be to small and not have enough thread wraps on it for the amount of pressure that may be exerted on them. And thank you for your feedback and input.

I started on this project a while back and did not get to far. I got distracted with some other rods and fishing so now I’m back to it. The blank is a Rainshadow SP842 7’ 6-12lb and will be built as a casting rod. I plan on using 12 to 15 lb braid throwing light plugs and plastics. So as for the guides I don’t want them to big that they take away from the rod but big enough to handle the larger f

Thanks for all the reply’s. I haven’t gotten into turning my own cork yet but it’s on the radar. Right now have enough projects and tools as it is. Now all I need to do is find an 8”-9” tapered fore grip. That’s why I have a feeling I might be learning to turn cork sooner then later. Again thanks for all your input

I want to use a 12" x 1" cork rear grip and a 1" tapered fore grip on a JudgeML. It's butt DIA is .600. Is the cork grip thick enough to take the pressure or do I risk the cork failing? The rod will be spinning rod with a 5000 real meant to cast and free line baits to maki, small tunas, sailfish, and other reef fish. Thanks for any and all input.

Thanks for all the information. I’m going to do some more research, play around with a blank or two, and come back with more questions. I even have some questions for my self now.

So they will be standup rods, with 20# mono. They will all be run through outrigger clips and flat line clips. So the actual pulling of the baits will be more from the clips then the rod tips. So would that change some of the dynamics at the ohitial strike? And the reason for 7' rods is that I've had difficulty finding shorter blanks that are medium to medium light in power.

I am trying to decide on what action would be best for a saltwater trolling rod. What are the benefits of a fast action compared to a medium action rod for trolling? And vice versa. The rod will be 7' in the 15-30 lb range. I plan on useing 20# mono. They will be pulling small plugs, and small rigged ballyhoo, or small live bait. Also some kite fishing. Thanks for your thoughts and input.

I want to build a casting rod that can throw smaller jerk baits and crank baits for river snook. Lures weighing 1/4oz and 12lb braid. I’m thinking of probably using a bass rod blank since everything I see for inshore is already a little to heavy for such light lures or lacks a fast action. Also probably in the 7’ range. Any thoughts on blanks would be appreciated. Thanks

I tend to troll far more then run and gun but might put the boat in Marathon next spring so that could change things. Most the time pitching baits is while trolling or bottom fishing when one seems to show up. I’ve ordered one of each blank and will determine once I have them in hand how to move forward. You two have been so helpful I really appreciate it.

That being said I'm always open to thoughts, suggestions, and input. Still learining and will take everything I can get. After this build light trolling/kite rods. Again 20# mono build.
