Hey everyone, I know there are a ton of threads on here on spiral wrapping. And I have read many of them describing the different spiral wrapping methods and techniques, but still have some questions on guide sizing. I am building an 8' xh saltwater rod that the blueprint states the guides to be used are 25,20,16,12,10,10,10,10,10. However I am not sure if I would need to change the guide sizes f

I figured that may be the case.. I had just seen shark rods like the Barrett rods and thought it would be cool to try and build a rod that was fully marbled like one of those. Except this is an 8' rod not a short shark rod.

That sounds more or less like what I'm looking to accomplish Matt. I'm not really worried about the weight as it is an XH rod and another foot worth of epoxy wouldn't be significant in my mind once 4' of the rod is marbled. I figured it would be easier to just extend the 2nd coat of epoxy to the tip rather than apply a second type of coating but was uncertain if that would hold up under flexing.

Thanks for the guidance! If I paint the tip of the rod for higher visibility would I be better to put a urethane clear coat paint over the tip or could I just extend the clear epoxy to protect that paint?

Hello, I have never tried marbling a rod before but am looking to start making some attempts. I have looked at some youtube videos but they are all on marbling small sections with many colors. I am looking to marble 4' section of an xh saltwater rod. I want a two tone with a color and black. The rod blank I will be marbling will be black, so am I able to marble just a single color over the black

Hey guys, I am looking to build a heavy duty saltwater rod with tarred twine grips. I have done this before with good results appearance wise, but with 1/8" cork tape under the grip, with a lot of pressure you can dent the cork underneath and create a slight gap between the thread which then needs worked out. I bought some 1/16" cork tape to use this time with the hopes it will compress

Yes I have read some discussions on this site on whether or not a flex additive was needed. It pretty much seemed equally divided. Half said it was necessary and half said the newer paints don't need the flex additive so that's still a mystery at this point too.

I was looking at some of the KemFX systems on thecoatingstore.com, unfortunately I am not only new to rod building but I'm also new to automotive paint systems so I have a lot of research going on right now.

Hello all,
I am just starting out rod building and would like to build myself some extra heavy catfish rods. I would like to experiment with doing some custom painting with automotive urethane paint. My question is, after a clear coat has been applied to the automotive paint, should I apply another type of protective coating over the clear coat? If so what should I use and how should it be appl
