Doug, Type of rod really depends on how you plan to fish for steelies. Bank?? drift boat?? sled??. I have fish a lot here in CA. for them. If you are a "Bankie" I would suggest a lite to med spinning rod with 12 to 15 lb test. If back bouncing I would suggest a "Hot Shot" rod with a small baitcaster and again 12 to 15 lb test. There are many blank makers who make this type o

If you are looking for the expandable nylon type cover, like a "Stix Jacket" You can buy a number of diameters and lengths even a 100 foot roll, (which is what I have done) from a web site called "wire ties and more". I bought a 100 foot roll and can cut to any length I want. Most all of my rod now have a nice protective cover. I use an elecltric k

Hello All, Do any of you have any info on something I just caught wind of. When placing guides on rod you start off with the first guide being on top of rod and you progressily rotate guides so as when you get to tip top it is 180 degrees opposite of reel seat. Much like the look of a spinning rod tip top. I don't know the correct name for this style of rod building Please advise "BENT RO

Anyone have some tips on preventing bubbles in the final app of epoxy. I have watched the Flexcoat (product I use for final coat) video on how to mix, I have added acetone to epoxy to help thin it for easy bubble release and even used a heat gun to thin epoxy, not a good idea!! Any advise would be helpful, THANKS Bent rods to ya !!

Ken, I use Flex Coats "Color preserver and thread sealer" on most every rod I build. I put the rod in my drying motor (about 8 rpm) and apply as rod turns. I like to use it for 2 reasons, it helps to seal the threads to the rod, which helps keep the threads together when doing overlays and second, it delays the darkening of the original color, as over time and exposure to sunlight it w

John, Have a good one armed friend that I have designed a rod for inshore light tackle here in No. Calif. I remember as a kid a fly reel that was my dad's that was spring loaded and auto retreived ( I think it was a Phuegler, bad spelling sorry) Not sure if that company still is in business.Depending on the distance of retreive, I think a simple spring system might work. Stay in touch.............
