use traditional (prokote, threadmaster, flexcoat, etc) solutions for thread wraps (guide and deco)

I second Michael's comment
"top of the line' usually means more expensive to many people
since you love your Crowder rod which is an E glass blank not a high modulus all graphite blank
focus on a match to that and if the price of the blank is less than you can spend don't talk yourself into more $ must be better

I am totally confused by the rod manufacturers with labels 10-15lb mono | 30-40 lb braid . . .
I think it is a throw back to when braid used was 3x label lb # of mono line . . because "test" mono (not class or tournament) actually breaks at a higher lb and the original braids would break (especially at knots) at close to or lower lb than label
Donald talked about a static load test .

skipping CP only works if you KNOW the thread has no silicone additives - most embroidery threads (Maderia Polyneon) used for deco wraps NEED CP to prevent epoxy issues.

I'd only use the perma-gloss on the guide thread wraps
and use epoxy rod finish on the decal as explained in the article provided by the custom label system web site from link on left

no idea
I use the simple spiral - makes the most sense to me since the shortest distance between two points is a straight line
guide closest to the reel is at zero or close to it and third guide is at 180 . . the in between (2nd) guide is what-ever where-ever to keep the line off the blank

What tapes does everyone find they use most with the PEARLabel 270 and 360
I only have silver on clear 1/2" and gold on clear 1/2"
thanks

so maybe people could cut and weight their used fly lines and someone could collect and share the data

Phil,
Aren't some fly lines (shooting heads or spey lines) already labeled in grains instead of an AFTMA number? . . but again that is based on length of line before the running line or the AFTMA number of feet to weigh and convert to a number . .
But I think I see your point . . if each fly line had actual weight for 20 feet, 30 feet, 40 feet etc. on the label you would know that x feet of a 7

finished wrap looks different
regular thread has more of a sparkle to it then NCP
especially in sun light

it may be a long shot
but I would call mudhole and see if their camo Eva supplier will do red white and blue
I also think there might be enough demand for it to become an item in their catalog
I'd buy some

I would go size 8 KW as running guides
I don't fish braid over 65lb usually 40 or 50 and leaders in 30lb range plus or minus 10
Norman
at what line/leader weight with which knots do you need typically a size 10 running guide?

interesting conversation
I read you learn a lot about rod building by deconstructing - but I haven't done much of that luckily
I find it easier to remove and redo a wrap with CP - but not significantly . .
I also at times prefer no CP for that translucent look - black testors paint (will try nail polish next) on the ground guide foot for a black guide frame is best in that case IMO
One thing

1st guide is about 21" from reel lip
guide is a KL-H 25
and hook keeper is 90 degrees off to one side about 4.5" from reel spool lip

Randy - sorry I'm on the east coast
also anglers resource has an excellent pdf with the heights of all (I think) the Fuji guides
should make it easier to find another model you might have with the guide height of the KW your planning with

this is the result of the craft foam being softer
Billy Vivona sells thin strips of the same density as the eva blocks
in a recent RodMaker magazine there was an article about using a rotary sander in combination with a lathe
I think the technique was designed for working with materials of different densities

gotcha
best advice I've read is to buy one of each size guide in the cheapest ring and metal of a model
and use them as fitting guides
once final choice is made buy only what you need in more expensive versions
I build enough with KW and KL guides that it made sense for me

54. Re: Hook keeper
on some of my spinning rods with hook keeper in front of the fore grip
my line catches once in a while during retrieves especially when working light plastics with snappy retrieves that introduce slack into the line
any recommendations on hook keeper type and location?
no split grip so I can't move it below the reel

I believe the GPS software provides a position for each size of model of guide
it does not provide a recommended guide train
it is up to you the determine if 2 or 3 reduction guides and in what sizes fit your build best
the Fuji website provides more of a build recommendation in the KR system section
the info is all there on the anglers resource web
but everything can't be in one place so r

re: "are guide size and ID the same thing (in mm)? "
guide size is actually the approx. OD (in mm) of the ring . . . so guides labeled the same size but with different ring materials/thickness can have different IDs
read marketing material on Torzite for example
I know - doesn't seem as straight forward as guide size = ID since that is what matters, but it is what it is

I would use the Fuji (angler's resource) GPS software to get a starting point for guide placement.
Some reels have zero upsweep angle, in other words the spool shaft is parallel to the blank.
Follow the reel measurement instructions and then experiment by entering alternatives until the angle is zero - the GPS will still provide a choke point and positions for most if not all guides style Fuji
