I just acquired 3 McFarland fly rod blanks from a guy who is no longer interested in rod building- blanks are labeled as follows; Emerger 905-2 Emerger 906-2 Guide 965-2 They appear to be very nice blanks. I did a quick Google search but I didn't come up with much information on McFarland blanks. Any ideas on construction materials, quality, value, interest would be greatly appreciated. T

Thanks for your suggestions on the prototype fit-up. Of course he'll have to purchase everything in advance. I see lots of Batson (et. al.) 10-12# rods I could start with but his 1oz. jig requirements exceed the rod capability- I'm probably going to have to go with a 10-20# blank but it may be too stiff even with a fast taper. He says he's going to use it from a boat but may use it occasiona

I've had a request to make a short jigging rod specifically to target lake trout. The client wants a conventional reel 48" rod using 20 # braid and 10-12# leader. I have no experience building anything this short (other than ice rods) or light (I build mostly salt water rods). I assume I'm going to have to start with a longer rod and cut it down but would really appreciate some suggestion

Mark, I completed a spiral wrapped rod (MHX 6'6" 30-80# rod blank) last fall using American Tackle Virtus Ring Lock (heavy) guides. I used the rod jigging and chunking for tuna to 71#'s last January and was very pleased with my first spiral wrapped rod and the guides. Dan

Randy, I have a rod tip off my broken Interline surf rod you can have (as in free)- looks like it's the size you're looking for. Call me at 801-967-9983 and you can give me your address. Dan

That's a very interesting idea Mel- that will leave me a little more fore-grip to grasp. Since this joint is critical, how many wraps of thread and what size would you recommend? Thanks

Guys, I'm building my first popping rod- it's a 2-piece Mudhole blank with just the handle section comprising one of the sections to facilitate transport. My question is this; Should I complete the handle right up to the butt joint or should I stop about 1 to 1-1/2 inches short so that I can complete a thread wrapped section for reinforcement? I've seen commercial rods done both ways but I
