I am doing the same, but for the first rod plan to build from a ferruled blank. But, do the builders prefer to sell the finished rod or are they happy to sell as a blank? Maybe its my imagination but I've gotten the impression so far that business is so good that they'd rather sell the finished rod than blank. Maybe I'm wrong, its happened before. I can't afford the finished rod really, plus bein

Yep, I had the same luck with my search for Talon with Anglers Workshop. But, the website is always a little iffy in my opinion. So, I'll just call them to see if they can help with Talon. I sent the Talon an email and haven't heard from them. Dustin, your experience with the rods and their actions is where I want to go with this, thanks for your feedback.

Trying to narrow down some of my options related to a moderate/fast action fly rod for trout fishing on the tailwaters. Have about decided to go with either the Talon series Highlander or Highlander Light. Looking specifically at the Highlander light (HL8'7" -2) or (H9'0"F-4T3)
Haven't really seen much about Talon anywhere, does anyone here have any experience or advice they can offe

The book Building a fiberglass rod by Dale Clemens desbribes a couple of different tools that you can make to complete the blank. Old book, but it a good one and should be easy to find.

Steve & Tom,
Thanks for your perspective, I've never seen it explained that way. Makes a lot of sense and I appreciate your help. Thanks for such a great resource Tom.

You've all made some really valid points, but for small stream fishing, average cast of 10-30 ft, wouldn't a quality fiberglass rod roll cast and protect your tippet more than the IM6 graphite? I know the fiberglass isn't the casting tool that graphite is, I am talking about for trout and smallie fishing in close. To me it seems that fiberglass has certain applications where it excels.

This has been a question of mine for awhile, can a graphite rod really give you the action of cane/fiberglass? I think for a small stream rod fiberglass is probably the way to go, loads easier with the shorter casts but I am seldom on a small stream "unfortunately" the factor that seems to make a difference for me is the weight of the blank and the overall look of the rod. I like the li

Thanks to everyone for the information and helping me to decide which blank to put some of my time into. I wonder why Lamiglas discontinued the Perigee for awhile? I thought maybe they may have had some breakage issues due to the thin walled blanks and they discontinued them but maybe not. This thing about building a rod is kind of subjective, when I take the time to build a rod for myself, I wan

Since were discussing cane rods, if you were going to buy a cane "blank" where would you start to find a supplier?

Here’s what I am trying to do, I want to build a medium fast action 9 ft #4 fly rod for fishing the tailwaters. Have some questions about various mid priced fly blanks.
Has been awhile since I've built a fly rod, back to it now and I'd like to consider something besides a Rainshadow and Pac Bay. Does anyone have any experience building and fishing the Shikari fly blanks? Was considering the
