Guys around the shop have achieved this by doing a secondary application with a matte varnish after first apply normal epoxy finish. This is also a great way to achieve the look on a rod that you've already finished.

Ken, When you sand the blank down it will provide you with a "natural" finish. They are fine to use like that, many of the grab bag blanks still had the cellophane wrap intact. You can actually pull this wrap off of the blank without sanding in many instances. If you do decide to sand the blanks, again they will be fine to use with out any additional finish.
